Heights of Summer
How wonderful to be lolling about here.
Spreading one's limbs on the palm of a rock's hand.
In the nude.
Just back from a swim.
Strands of wet hair still on my forehead.

It's summer here.
Next to nearest, above and in front.
While frolicking among corollas of pink carnation.
With the cheeks steeped into the strawberry rouge.
Yelling one's joy out into the air like a mockingbird's song on the beach.
You just stretch out your hand, and watch -
it is full of summer!

How wonderful to be here.
Watching the busy ants' toiling through summer.
Without a thought in mind.
The sky above, a tent-like silken blue.
In the horizon a golden coin glittering gorgeous.

Already one's skin has become ripened leather, indeed it has, already,
verily a baking oven of the Creator's
this rock.

The Superfluous Woman

Ghosts crying down the vistas of the years,
Recalling words
Whose echoes long have died,
And kind moss grown
Over the sharp and blood-bespattered stones
Which cut our feet upon the ancient ways.

But who will look for my coming?

Long busy days where many meet and part;
Crowded aside
Remembered hours of hope;
And city streets
Grown dark and hot with eager multitudes
Hurrying homeward whither respite waits.

But who will seek me at nightfall?

Light fading where the chimneys cut the sky;
Footsteps that pass,
Nor tarry at my door.
And far away,
Behind the row of crosses, shadows black
Stretch out long arms before the smouldering sun.

But who will give me my children?

My Lady Shadow

My lady shadow I’m stumbling away
opening locks. Did you think
I wanted to burn on a different
wheel? She turns her head to the left
and will have no name. She asserts not speaking.
I’m going from this hallway I reply.

A harmonica can burn you too
any good can wound. Leaving, I’ll miss you
from whom I can accept nothing angelic
a fixed vow precluding illusions
I don’t know who I can be, but
you can’t give it to me. Yet I’m talking to you.

Are you still yourself, he’d said sarcastically
knowing I was not. Can I glimpse you
abandoning everything yours except that
little sound, surrounding your wordless core?
I’ve caused much to happen to me
but was never quite that woman. I thought of you

not a fetish; a shade of stone, like myself
I know your texture — Are you still yourself? he said —
You are, not me.
Facing well the ladyless
path — or is the other a woman we both
don’t recognize? And wheel, not desire,
purely to turn and convey me. Left, I’m the way.
