Just can't get out of my own way today......

April 28 Portsmouth Jazzmouth Lite, Sunday at The Press Room, which is being opened that morning especially for us. 11:30-02:00 pm, The Beat Night / Jazzmouth band is in place. We have 15, 5-minute slots for poets (sign up at the door), and the price for the buffet, prepared by the new Press Room kitchen staff, is $15+drinks+tips. April 28 Portsmouth at 5pm. RiverRun will hold a release party for Piscataqua Poems: A Seacoast Anthology. First place winner of the poetry contest was Kay Morgan her poem, "Star Island Moments", the second place award was Maren Tirabassi - her poem "The Tide Remembered". Tirabassi is a former Portsmouth Poet Laureate . The five poets receiving third place prizes are Susan Hamilton, Jane Vacante, Charlotte Cox, Mary Anker, and Marie Harris. Fortuitous Poem
I divide the people I don’t greet into four groups.

There are those whom I don’t greet in order not to compromise myself
This is the simplest group.

Next, there are those whom I don’t greet in order not to compromise them.
This requires a certain amount of attention.

But then there are those whom I don’t greet in order not to get into their bad books.
They are even harder to deal with.

And, finally, there are those whom I don’t greet in order not to get into my bad books.
This takes a particular amount of concentration.

But I’ve had quite a bit of practice, and by my manner of not greeting people I manage to express each of those nuances in such a way that no injustice is done to anyone.

Psalm

All our dark, our unholy desperation
is a blessing — to see the orphan
awkward, lumpish,
an easy target in each of us
and know that voice
is never lost.
Like fish we rise from the stone
rivers of our sleep,
all silver skin and watery eyes,
remembering
the gill-breath, the moon tides,
that current that stretches like a wire through our spines,
till our flesh feathers and our mouths beak
a rasp, a few disjointed notes,
the guttural song of our junkyard hearts.
Even the trees, silent all these years, are bellowing.
And we speak, finally, our original tongues,
material as ink or bone and urgent.
It hurts some, all our translations.

But who among us would
keep silent here?
