Stable at Speed

I am the two-legged dog,
one front, one hind,
and stable at speed.
I go in great leaning curves,
tongue lolling like the flopping
pink spoke of a crop circle.
I need only half the long bones
to gallop laughing arcs ‘round
a summer stubble field,
after the bloody sickle bar
gave me this bipedal way
of stretching over a bowled slope,
a hayfield cut short, pale,
and razored, where the air parts
and comes together, flows above
and below liver spotted ribs
as they heave the simple magic
of speed—speed like a yo-yo
looping round-the-world,
speed like a ruffed grouse
tilting through aspens,
not going down.
