Editors Jen Bervin and Marta Werner, will present text and images from their new book, The Gorgeous Nothings: Emily Dickinson's Envelope Poems (Christine Burgin/New Directions 2013), Attendees will learn more about this little-known but important body of Dickinson’s writing. A multimedia presentation will be followed by a Q&A session. A quiet masterpiece—equal parts artist book, portfolio, and act of archival scholarship—this new trade publication features Emily Dickinson’s complete envelope writings in facsimile from her visually stunning manuscripts. The book presents 52 envelope-poems reproduced in their original size in full color with the editors' accompanying transcription.

Visiting Hour
The hospital smell
combs my nostrils
as they go bobbing along
green and yellow corridors.

What seems a corpse
is trundled into a lift and vanishes
heavenward.

I will not feel, I will not
feel, until
I have to.

Nurses walk lightly, swiftly,
here and up and down and there,
their slender waists miraculously
carrying
their burden
of so much pain, so
many deaths, their eyes
still clear after
so many farewells.

Ward 7. She lies
in a white cave of forgetfulness.
A withered hand
trembles on its stalk. Eyes move
behind eyelids too heavy
to raise. Into an arm
wasted
of colour a glass fang is fixed,
not guzzling but giving.
And between her and me
distance shrinks till there is none left
but the distance of pain that neither she nor I
can cross.

She smiles a little at this
black figure in her white cave
who clumsily rises
in the round swimming waves of a bell
and dizzily goes off, growing fainter,
not smaller, leaving behind only
books that will not be read
and fruitless fruits.

Now empty titles make no sign to mark
depraved from honest: often dingy garb
and tight conceals a cleaner, ampler heart

Suppose that titles, medals did burn in
a legal mark of worth. Why even good
Priuli, frank Faerno would pay life
itself for such, so not to seem formed ill
and ill-alert, though both pursue true worth:
men glassy glory never tickles, free
of fever. We, however much the burning
shakes have passed, are still not wholly well.
