 RATION CARD:

 

It is service provided in the Indian system similar to social security benefits.

 

As you have SSN in the USA we have now Aadhaar number.

 

The ration distibution system is also useful for emergencies eg famine, war, flood and drought.

 

Many families are eligible for rice Rs 2 per kilo, though the market prices are Rs 30--40 per kilo.

 

Currently the govt is changing the paper card system to the digital card system.

 

There are concerns among many as regrads loss of benefits,

 

Some families may have topay at least Rs 30 per kilo (free market) from Rs 13 per kilo (ration store) -- a very big jump.

 

Of course Govt expect to lower he cost of maintaining the system. And none likes complaints like fake cards, sale of goods procued from the ration shop in the open market etc.

 

There is no reason to surrender the cards of genuine beneficiaries.

 You might have watched the long lines at the ATM's and the banks for exchanging notes.

 

Many like just depoits instead of over the counter exchane upto 4000.

 

Real hassle is the withdrawal from the aTM's. Transaction with checques are ok.

 

I used the word "hujug (beng.)" because the long lines reminded me of 30's America and second world war Germany!

IIT SYSTEM:

 

Much of my writings at this Den was centred around searching for alternative paradigms within IIT system. If you had followed me since 2003, you might have reali\zed that I was advocating pluralism within the IIT system, that I had refered to as "pluralism as a manifestation of fascism". search for another degree, alternate business model, self-financed research, age limit etc. were all part of this quest. I received help from many quarters. And I was more sincere than you might have imagined --- you might not believe how many times God saved from the jaws of death. But finally I lost since the IIT sytem is not interested, as I understand now, in my kind of profile as a stereotype of 'successful academician'. You might have noticed that the Current Science published the special issue on biotech that proved that I am no body in biotech. Similarly MBU had conferences on structural biology that proved that I am nobody.

 

What it means is that my stereotype cannot be followed as an alternate path for success in scientific career, the presumption I started with. Since I shared my feeling, thoughts and plans with you since 2003, I made it my responsibility to inform you of the outcome. You can live like me, but you may never become successful in the University system, since the lateral entry I cherished is not possible within the IIT system. And of course IITians are leaders in technical education in India.

 

I shared my thoughts so that you can plan your career in a realistic manner.

Hi,

 

Some of you might remember me. I used to write quite often during 2003--2008. Many used to read me. Even some of you sent me messages.

 

I was dreaming of starting a writer's company (say DTP) then. It did not happen.

 

Then I went through many many problems. I am happy that I am alive and earning.

 

 My plans of writing books did not succeed, but I had not given up.

 

Nowadays I make few bucks near Kolkata (don't know for how long). Like many Bengalees I get fish from local market -- Chitol, Ilish, Rui, Katla etc.

 

I don't plan on going abroad. It is financially not possible.

 

I had forgotten about St. Patrick Day. Nowadays I participate in Bengali festivals. The other day I became curious about my Chinese horoscope (apparently I am rabbit). You might not beieve that one night it was lightning like hell in Kolkata; and the next morning I found in the newspaper that the Chinese people were celebrating New Year! 

 

I was following the World Cup in Cricket; but not as much. My life style had changed.

 

I intend to write regularly again after sometime. You are welcome to follow me.

You might be amused to know that I was submitting "articles" to several journals, and I was always remembering Authors Den ( I am with you since 2003;many journals did not use web submission then). In fact I made a submission on "Web Submission".

 

Last night I was thinking of sharing a new joke with you. It s new because you have to know both Indian and American cultures.

 

Then I changed my mind this morning. I read a local news item that a python had engulfed a goat, then finally the goat was pulled out the villagers. This reminded me of a bengali song line that I often hum "ore beta murkho patha... Hey you the stupid goat....

Not a joke....

 

What A Thanksgiving

 

 I used to drink some soup during Thanksgiving; I did not know how to cook; I do not even remember the name!

 

In Chicago I used to do lot of experiment in cooling. Usually I used to eat my "cooke new recipe"; sometimes I used to throw! I wasted quite some money!

 

This Thanksgiving I wanted to cook "Tamarind Soup" and was trying to invent a recipe. Tamarind is not a respectable vegetable, but it can compete with any junk food.

 

Early in the week of Thanksgiving, I took a cold water bath as usual and caught a cold. Then I took some paracetamol and slept. Whenever I woke up, I was trying to calculate if Thanksgiving Dinner was over yet.

 

Finally I woke up, wore my gree-coloured sweater, took the bus and came to work. It was still the Thanksgiving Day in the USA, but the Dinner was already over!

 

What a Thanksgiving!

1. I promise to pay what I owe, whether individual, institution (e.g. Church) or financiers (e.g. banks); this is still not the right time.

 

2. If I were to become rich, I shall donate to the Church.

 

3. Accordingly my past should not be viewed as the life of a "homeless riffraff"; I believe that it is required for earning my higher degree (whether Law, Economics or Business)

 

4. Moreover I believe that a foreigner should work for a charity and/or public organizatin to qualify for Green Card / Citizen in the USA (similar to working for Military/Police/ROTC in the USA). It is not a punishment, but a requirement for the non-whites to become equal to the whites in a multi-racial society.

 

5. My past in Chicago and Bangalore should be viewed in the context of my conviction regarding public policies. And that's why there is no "gap" in my CV. I had essentially become more mature and pragmatic, growing out of the cocoons of government jobs and rural lower middle-class Brahminic parentage.

 

6. What difference would it make to my personal life? Nothing much, only other people would say similar things and make more money; with or without being pampered by the FBI/CIA (USA).

Despite an ugly pre-amble, I felt unusually good this morning.........

 

Happy Onam 2008...

 

Until today I did not realize how priviledged I was at the UIC, and before that at the IIT's, as a student! 

 

I was feeling too good this morning and came to work a bit early. The weather liked me and I liked the weather. Nice bows from the tree branches flattered me!

 

I was happy and happier because all of my computer terminals were working. Then suddenly I met a few Malayalis celebrating Onam!

 

After many many years ( something that was common for me at the UIC), during the lunch break I ventured out for a stroll towards the park! One is always worried about the issues!

 

Clouds were moving back and forth, making me say "Megher kole rode hensechhe (Beng.)" Winds were blowing reminding me of the windy city. I remembered the birds opposite to the UIC medical library where I spent almost ten of my youthful years! The trees and shrubs were bowing in gay, and I was trying very hard to remember the name of the street in Chicago I walked through for five long years ---- but in vein!!! I I was vaguely recollecting couple of poems by Mohit Lal Majumdar ---- but forgotten now!!

 

I was wondering if I would ever be back to the Harold Washington Public Library, since I won't be able to pay the expenses for even one day!! When I was very young, I had promised to go back to one small town within a month of my departure ------ and I have not done that yet, even after 35 years !!!!!!!!!!!

 

 

 

I now know how free I feel once in a while!

Happy 2006: Book for a Buck

 

Why cann't Lubert Stryer write a book that would cost only $10?! While I was an Undergraduate student, most of the books I liked from the Western press were too expensive for me (perhaps meaning that I am too poor for my profession). Some vernacular books were cheaper. Books from ELBS (English Language Book Society) were cheaper; but the Russian books (on metallurgy, chem engg, numerical sums, math, politics, etc... ) were the cheapest --- most cheaper than even vernacular text books. I remember buying textbooks for Rs 10 to 25 during 1980-1987! The only competition could have been the ABTA testpapers for Bengali students (like sample papers for board exams) that used to sell for only Rs 10! Someone explained that Russians were 'progressive', that's why they subsidized books. My biological father, with his discourteous and irritating lower-middle class Bengali Brahmin mouth, never appreciated the subsidy that went into my education and training; ---- much of the rupee/dollar came from government money; rest came as voluntary labour of 'progressive' elders (I was one of them when I was too young!)! My biological father's mouth was so bad, and his public contribution so insignifant, that even Russians stopped publishing cheap books for me! And I have eventually become a 'revisionist convert'!

 

After I went to the USA for Graduate School, I found books expensive even in the USA! I was not only poor in India, I was a poorer American (perhaps relative income comparable to Mr. Dole's father, or Mr. Daley's father)!

 

When I was very young progressive individual (barely in my 10's), one of my "homeless friends' wanted me to write a book, and wished it were a German book with Russian price! What a blessing! As I evolved, through stages and steps, by teaching Biology and Mathematics in my own language for about ten years, learning to write like the Russians (e.g. "Why Am I Like Dad"), copying the style of "Cambridge" and "Harvey" lecturers (of course I am not yet regular lecturer in Bangalore colleges run by the AICTE -- I am nowhere near Prof YJ Rao) for improving quality and presentation, making friends with "Scientific American editors", writing for an established Academic journal, and pushing my self through the unfashionable details of the printing press, I reach this year of 2006. Would I be able to print research pamphlets that would compete with the Germans, Harvard, Cambridge, but bear a Russian price tag? Apparently, I came to know later, one Tamil professor was also obsessed with scientific publishing like me!  

 

Why is it so difficult to write a book? Why could not my professor, say Dr. P. Sengupta who later became IIChE president, could not publish a book that competes with Coulson-Richardson? Why could not Dr. GS Tendolkar, a famous Indian metallurgist, publish a book replacing German' fame (powder metallurgy)? It took nearly twenty years of my efforts (1982-2002) to understand why P Sengupta could not become as immortal as Coulson! After I became wiser, I understood that I can only write like Roitt (Immunology) or Feymann (physics)!

 

How about a German book on biotechnology at a Russian price now? My goal in Bangalore was to publish lectures (pamphlets) for ten rupees each. Based on the facility available to me (off set printers) around Bangalore, I can publish a decent book (with many multi-coloured illustrations) on Biotechnology priced at Rs.100, medium size flyers priced below Rs 50, and lectures priced Rs. 10! Imagine getting science and Engineering books in "Dollar Bill (Chicago)" for a few dollars ($1 to $3)!

 

Price being taken care, I need only worry about my German content --- hopefully I would be successful before I get "too old"!

A lone gunman spoiled the mood of many in Bangalore last evening (Dec 28 late evening.)....

 

IISc and the Gunmen

 

Prof. Ganguli, the self-styled professor in my story 'Ur Bangalore', died a natural death that typified his kind of 'breed'. Some of the real established professors are not that lucky.

 

Last night, science city Bangalore experienced a new style of terrorism that caused concern for President Kalam and the commoner alike. A loner came gathering of academicians busy deliberating in a research conference, spread bullets at random, threw one granade and then escaped in an ambassador car. One remembered the horrors of Arab-Israeli conflicts! In the Bangalore incident, One senior professor died, several scientists/academicians were injured, and some damage was caused to property. Had the granade not misfired, significant damage to the property, and injury to at least 50 people would be a realistic guess. The TOI issue I read read this morning, covered the incident filling two full pages, with several colour photographs, and without any speculations as to the motive or the connections.

 

Who could have done it? Mr. Goon (in story Ur Bangalore) could not have; Mr. Italian (Ur Bangalore) could have done it, but he usually avoids IIT-IISc-TIFR. Mr. Nataraj (Ur Bangalore) can only create noise with AK 47, he is better at using canes and clubs. At best he might try .303 rifle or a pistol. Disgrunled CPIM or RSS members could not have done it. Naxals, LTTE or Lashkars are not that powerful in Bangalore either.The assasign had AK-47, hand granade and a car. The venue for the attack, the Tata Auditorium, is a VIP zone -- populated by best brains of India. In addition to routine securities provided by the IISc, one sees Police Station in an adjacent building, and the Indian Air Force facilities near by. The attacker came, caused the damage and escaped to safety. 

 

I remember walking through housing projects in Chicago. Then I lived in homeless shelters near such neighbourhoods. I thanked the Black kids for not shhoting me down with an AK 47. Someone explained to me one-day, that my residence in the White neighborhood, and the homeless shelters run by the Churches are "netral zones", where no gangs had orders to shoot. Apparently, some of my disgruntled students, according to rules, could only throw eggs, not pipe bombs at me (I learned it the hard way while walking past a gathering of the Blacks on Ashland Avenue, Chicago; and I thanked them again for their kindness!)!

 

The Police would of course sooner or later nab the terrorist(s). One has to remember though, Bangalore being the city of Indian brains, interests all kind of 'professional people' --- RAW, ISI, KGB, CIA, Libyans, Ugandans, Mossad etc.. As there is no near-term solution to the traffic jam in Bangalore, there seems to be no prevention for isolated incidents of terrorism, however cruel and mean might it appear.

As Paris burns herself in an ethnic strife, I remember the bourgeosie French revolution, relation of Indians with the French, and of course the heroic tales of the 'French underground' fighting the Nazi's during the second world war. I also remember how miserably I failed to learn French, as I overdid my cocky attempts to learn Russian ,German, Danish and Spanish at the same time! Lately I was paging through a collection of short stories (English translation) written by Maupassant. These timeless stories had interested me for quite some time; but I have to finish writing an abstract.

The Kannada idol Dr. Rajkumar passed away...

 

 

Dr. Rajkumar Passed Away

 

Kannada matinee idol, the 'sarthakanama' actor, the 'annavaru' to lakhs of Kannadigas, who survived the capitivity under Veerappan, passed away on Wednesday. His state funeral took place on Thursday in Bangalore.

 

The "tamma's" of 'annavaru' apparently were not happy with the funeral arrangement made by the authorities; they went on a rampage damaging property, and burning scores of vehicles, many of them being police vehicles.

 

As the government ordered State mourning, and traders closed down shutter to show last respect to the departed, I could not find even one internet cafe to post this note on Thursday.

I intend to write on Rajkumar at my convenience elsewhere. As I was paging through memory, I remember him playing the stereotypes that are different from the so called "Hindi-Film" stereo-types. Each genius lives and attains success through their own uniqueness --- but I like visualising Dr. Rajkumar as rajkumar, the most handsomely prince.

2016: The Newborn --- Kumbhokorner Bongso

 

aaji e probhate robira kar kemone posilo praner por (I wonder how the rays of the rising sun this morning pervaded my heart)

 

As Ganguli had gone to bed last night, quite early in the evening, the title of this piece in the editors' mind was 'Kumbhokorner bongso sesh', meaning end of the Kumbhokarna family, Kumbhokarna being the demon who enjoyed sleeping! As the morning rays had pierced his heart, and after some efforts the eyes opened wider, Ganguli chanted Kumbhokarner bongso. The editors, as in the Bond movies, had to delete the word 'sesh' from the title.

 

As one watches Ganguli at work, one learns how to live and die in peace. But why a fellow counting his changes is unhappy until he finishes writing few more pages, when he himself does not where the pages would end and to what benefit.

 

Idiosyncracies are rules of nature. Nobody is illegal; only some are more successful, stronger, and richer and hence are more welcome relegating others to the background filled with minimal insignificance; actors act, audience watches to pay, such is the rule of the Law. Noise arises when a unprivileged strives to win privileges by his own means. But even a worm turns. So is our writer, reaping the benefits as he had sown.

How numbers affect my 'success'

 

 

The Number Theory

Mamatadidi (West Bengal) was stuck with 'talaa' (level) and degree (allegedly unverified credentials). I am stuck with my numbers.

 

Those who believe in astrology, the number theory is different; and is often based on date, time and place of birth. Persons like me are stuck with other kinds of numbers --- except my age, all other numbers in my life are consistently low. Cash is low, weight is low; pressure usually low, (though can be high at times); only temperature can be high once in a while. Then take the number of pages in my CV, the number of years of 'substantive experience', the number of students, the number of publications, the number of projects, the number of copyrighted books, the number of invitations, the number of conferences attended in past five years, and finally the number of girl friends. Prof. CNR Rao would say that my CV cannot be longer than half-a-page.The experience I have (or claim) is insignificant and cannot earn a fee/salary (ask my senior who, I am told, is now a Dean at the UIC, USA). The number of students I claim cannot be substantiated (ask the Principals in schools and colleges in Bangalore). The number of publications is , according to many, close to one. Have you seen any book published, under my single-authorship, from any peer-reviewed national press? Have you seen me as PI in any of the high or low profile "projects"? Have seen me in any gathering, except as a janitor, as a welcome invitee? Have you seen me anywhere as a lead speaker in a conference? Finally the number of girls in my name is close to zero.

 

Does anyone care about a nincompoop who zeroes in on loosers?

It is a joke....

This joke thanks liberal economists of all hues, who paid for my bills but got nothing........

 

 

What is 'kalaa-tantra'?

 

The word is not there in pocket size or standard size or even the mega-size Oxford dictionary; but if you cannot invent a new word, 16 would take away all the money. After the word is used often, the lexicographers would include the word as a 'foreign word' in English in the next edition for the mega-size dictionary.

 

kalaa-tantra is a compound word, made of two words; kalaa and tantra. Kalaa means banana, and tantra may mean politico-legal system, as in dhana-tantra, samaj-tantra etc. Tantra may also mean black magic, or the art and practice of black magic; one who practices tantra (essentially a cult) is a tantrik. But kalaa-tantra is not, in this context, a black magic involving bananas!

 

Let's go by analogy.

 

Dhana-tantra is a politico-legal system where the rich becomes rich (e.g. Bill Gates in the USA).

 

Samaj-tantra is a politico-legal system that is revolutionary in nature; meaning even a poor can become rich (e.g. Mr. Chandan Basu in West Bengal).

 

Kalaa-tantra is a system, that is weird since it defies the laws of supply and demand, as well as the revoltunioary enthusiam for change! In kalaa-tantra nothing happens regardless of the huge amount of money you may pump in (for example, me as Beachy Busy)! In essence, kalaa-tantra is a good buffer in today's volatile market and transitory world; it's kind of stoic, and 'too elastic' --- nothing would change no matter how much labour or money you put in!

 

Note: It so happens I hang out near a banana market!

French revolutionaries believed in equality, fraternity and liberty; many Indian revolutionaries believe in fraternity only....

 

 

"No power is ever-lasting. Only the wiser knows how to pay due respect to the powerless."........... my personal conviction.

 

 

What is Equality before the Law?

 

Is the Doctrine of Equality a Christian or a Hindu doctrine?

 

Is the Law 'Christian prudence' or 'Hindu prudence'?

 

How absurd or utopian this concept of equality is? For example, why should I claim Rs. one crore as compensation, where many people I know get only Rs. 30,000 to 40,000 during their lifetime.

 

Mr. Jyoti Basu is a special human being, how can he be equal to an insignificant individual like me?

 

Under what Law is Mr. Ganguli better than Dr. Govardhan Mehta (IIsc. Bangalore)?

 

How are the judges concerned about delivery of fair justice? How do political institutions ("party") obstruct delivery of fair justice, by drawing lines between upper level and lower level?

 

What if trial of trivial cases with insignificant individuals like me takes away precious time of the judges, and from urgent public matters?

 

Wherefrom the Judge derives his power? What is an offence (or 'incompetence') to his power (position), paid or unpaid.

 

How would doctrine of equality applied under communism and capitalism (Bangalore High Court is very special ---- they follow Bangalore Doctrine only!).

  We all talk about progress towards advancement, or in retaining heritage; some talk of careers....

 

 

What is Social Progress?

The only time I visited the Kapila river, I was impressed by its cool serene placid relation to me; it was so calm, it was still-- I do not know why it did not /does not flow. Or is it that the river stopped its flow. I felt happy and homely. My junior, an Assistant Prof. at the UIC, is from a city that is the spiritual centre typical of India ---- populous, gorgeous, old, dirty, populated, and perhaps corrupt. I found the Kapila river totally opposite, it is befiting my size. I would have been happy to die on the river that Makar Sankranthi day. Pehaps the river accepted me as Hindu, and I was happy. I even fantasized the Kapila flowing to my room, taking my dead-body, along with the books and the notes and the garbage I collected over the years. The Hurculean approach to the 'cleaning' would have definitely taken way my worries to pay for the rent in Bangalore; as I had to loose everything in Chicago. What is social progress then? (If you find my personal kachkachi as unpalatable as revisionism, you have your own journal anyway. Let telu-felu-delu-kalu read your journal. I just wanted to write for myself at my own cost).

Where to Find Better Janitors?

 

Outbreak of cholera in Bangalore made us think of the same old question, if I were a minister where would I find better janitors? Would you clean roads and toilets with a smily face as a service to the nation, but not as a testimony to the casteist exploitation by the nation? And I remembered Mr. MK Gandhi again. Frankly speaking, when I came back to India after working as a janitor in the USA, I was worried that the CPIM-BJP combination would make me a janitor with the same pay in Kolkata (I did not get much better pay anyway)!

 

As I was riding the bus this morning, I also remembered my maternal grand-father, a not-so-orthodox priestly lower middle class Brahmin who became successful as a school teacher in Mujaffarpur, Bihar. I always wondered how he went Bihar from a very backward village in remote West Bengal. I used to proudly say that my body-structure (appearance), and calm and quiet behaviour was after my maternal grand-father; and not after my volatile-angry- discourteous father (this is unusual since the family relations should run through paternal ancestries). My reading/writing habits (often boring, tedious, scholarly, and not-so-paying) could be credited to my grandfather and my Sanskrit teacher. My maternal grandfather, dead long ago, would also be my connection to Bihar, that I claimed as my second native( I intentionally do that as I would not get along with my father). My maternal grand-father tutored me for many years, specially in language and arithmetic, and I was his 'life' after retirement. I always wondered, he being a Brahmin, how would he have treated a janitor? Of course he followed the caste system in rural Bengal and Bihar. 

 

This morning, as I was riding the bus to work, I remembered a Bengali poem that I discussed with my grandfather long long ago-- the poem was about a janitor [If my memory serves me right the poet was Satyendra Nath Dutta and the poem, entitled 'Methar', starts with 'Ke bale tomare bandhu asprishya asuchi (who says that, you, my friend, are an impure untouchable?)]. I had told my grandfather that 'Methar' was a bad poem because it was about a janitor. He found me too 'insolent', and showed me how to write a very impressive precis of the poem in Bengali prose! Then I also liked the poem! I was too young to konw that I myself might become a janitor in Chicago; and perhaps school children all over even now would be as 'insolent' as I was when I was a child!

 

Why are janitors important? Are they only good for public health, cleanliness and the thankless jobs they do so that the aristrocrats and tourists could enjoy finer aspects of life? Or could we be the janitors of our own homes (as the 'whites' do) to improve our quality of life?

 

After I went to Chicago, I experienced the 'Brahminic insolence' in me, much the same way I experienced myself in discussing the poem 'Methar' with my grandfather. The janitors in Chicago are so happy, they keep everything clean, work very hard smilingly, and work during the night hours so that visitors and other patrons/users could use the cleaned workplace/public places during the day. Most of the janitors I knew were 'Black Americans'. Many of them rode cars. Once I met a janitor I knew on the CTA bus riding next to me; he was neatly dressed and well-groomed like any one else. Until then I was more like a bong (who could only lecture), but instantaneous I fell in love with Chicago-- was it because of its Capitalism or Revisionism? I tried very hard to keep everything clean by myself (white males did that at home anyway); but I always used to get sick and tired! I always wondered whether there were any limitations on my behaviour due to my family origins (caste) and upbringing? I would not be able to shovel snow as the whites do, since I was to weak! Would I ever be able to be equal to a White Chicagoan? It was long before I could even imagine that I would become a professional janitor! Since then I learned to accept Mr. Gandhi as one of the wisest men in human history, the father of modern India who knew why limited number of white protestant British could colonize the large landmass of India proud of its number of inhabitants, but not the other way?!

The number of my students varies, depending on the assessor. Why is this important?

Am I still a student? Who is my teacher/professor? Why is this question important to explain the financial failure in my life?

 

We all say one time or the other, we are still a student. And conversely who is my student?

 

If you ask some of the students I know (meaning individuals registered under recognised regular academic programmes), they might say that I am their teacher. Later the same students would claim that "we need no more education; everybody is equal before the law, days of hierarchial bureacracy are over; and they don't need another goofy oldie teacher!" That's the perspective of the students.

 

What is my position? I have three types of students: (1)who have attended my lectures/tuition, for free or after payment of fees, in any of the regular educational instituitions, (2)those who have worked on projects for me, that may last days to years, (3) those who read through my net, and those, whose behavoural pattern (personal, time and financial management), are my '-alikes'. The second and third categories are 'adults'--- they are similar to my 'dates' in the western terminology. Some leftists would estimate a total of 10,000 students under me, since 1973, at all levels --- preparatory pre-school to Ph.D./professional degree! I may not disagree if all three categories of students are taken into considerations.

How about people in power? the judges, the police, the directors, deans, the principals and the HOD's?

Most of them would reply that I wasted my youth in useful polemic and non-academic activities. Many of them would assign a 'pure zero' in my name. Prof. Amitabha Ghosh assessed me as persona non-grata with no students in my name from 1973-1999! He preferred to assign my students under other professors of his choice. If you ask the principals and HOD's in Bangalore, they would perhaps reply that my academic work is insignificant, that my presence was never required in Bangalore, and that I could have gone back to Kolkata (preferably to the Bay of Bengal in Mr. Gani Khan wished). Teaching records from the UIC are minimal; the UIC Dean/President may not even waste the postage sending me a letter of regret!

 

What difference does it make? With 10,000 students i could have become professor (principal) since the year 2000. With zero students in my name, I can only be part-time guest lecturer in the bad colleges. With no students, I can only become Sientist B or Scientific Officer; whereas my classmate can become Scientist F (Deputy Director level). The differences in my life, caused due to differences in opinions assessing my past experiences, is quite clear. What difference would it make to the life of my students? I prefer that they find their own answer.

 

More importantly, why such differences in opinion? There are two lines of arguments. One is the definition and priorities of personal good or 'partisan social good', by the poeple in power. Secondly, and more fundamentally, differences in opinions on 'normals' and 'morals' in an existing society with the accepted religio-legal, economic and administrative system. Such considerations may treat a person like me as ' non-hindu non-Indian'. I shall let the judges, police, and the other academicians ponder over the questions.

 

Why post this note? No power is absolute, and I sincerely believe in fair evaluation and fair justice? Do we need a change? Judges might differ on this issue. If Suttur were to ask me

why do we need industrialization in India, my answer may not be acceptable to this old village!

I don't own home or land here, i don't even carry a floppy/cassette. I rent the terminal and write and store through the web. Many bankers/officials/police may not even accept my visiting cards since I do not own significant property. Am I a homeless owner, or a pennyless employee? Who owns this webpage?
