I wrote my article 'Why do we not protect children and teenagers on the internet' - not from any moral high ground but from concern based on 35 years of knowledge and learning as a psychiatrist.

Some content on the internet can be traumatic for children and teenagers -containing images which disturb, shock, horrify - eg pornographic images, violence. Once the images are seen the child or teenager cannot 'unsee' them nor, because of the impact of the images, they cannot easily forget them. The results can adversely affect or skew their emotional development.

Adults have choice in their behaviour. However, children and teenagers need to be protected from internet contect that is totally inappropriate for their age group.

Those creating the images and circulating them have chosen to do so and as such will take ultimate responsibility. They obviously don't care now or they wouldn't create this problem, but once an action is done or an effect created, it cannot be wiped out.

Relying on parental controls or passwords is not sufficient to protect children or teenagers.
