Of course, we must continue to be vigilant, but now, more than ever since World War II, when comparable, unspeakable inhumanity occurred, we must offer compassion and kindness to all who hope for a peaceful life for their children and for themselves.

I believe Shadows Walking is especially urgent now: our world teeters on the edge of calamity and war, with racial and ethnic tensions luring us downward into bigotry, shrill intolerance and cruel selfishness. History, alas, seems to be repeating itself again ... to the horror of all men and women of good-will who hope for a better, more peaceful future for all of us.
Set in Germany before and during the Nazi era, Shadows Walking focuses on two German physicians—one a Protestant, the other a Jew: friends since their childhood; both veterans of World War I; both patriotic Germans; both medical students in Munich; and both trying to establish their medical practices as Hitler and ultra-nationalists, spewing their poisonous racial hatred come to power. Johann Brenner, M.D., a Protestant German, becomes a “Nazi doctor” and does what “Nazi doctors” did: participates willingly in forced "euthanasia," sterilizations and pseudo-scientific medical experiments on Germans, Jews, Roma and Sinti, Slavs, trade unionists, socialists, trade unionists, anti-Nazi intellectuals and activists—anyone who is unable to escape the Nazi menace. Philipp Stein, M.D., his German Jewish friend, unable to imagine such barbarism, ultimately meets Johann Brenner for the last time—at Auschwitz, a prisoner and victim of the Nazis' "crimes against humanity," as the prosecution at the Nuremberg Trials successfully will argue after Hitlerism's defeat. Based on my archival work in Germany and England, everything in Shadows Walking either happened or could have happened, exactly as I have described it.
