Literary collection that explores family issues makes Preditor and Editor''s Top Ten in spite of past year''s choices going primarily to genre fiction.
Popularity polls usually reward genre fiction more readily than poetry or short stories. This year the readers at Preditors and Editors Readers’ Poll didn’t agree. Carolyn Howard-Johnson’s award-winning book, Harkening: A Collection of Stories Remembered, garnered third place in the popular poll.
A collection of creative nonfiction pieces, this book traces one family’s trek through the different locations within the US. It may be read in bits and pieces but comes together at the end much like a novel, which may explain its popularity. Harkening’s book cover says it is about a “charming, dysfunctional and loving family with enough peccadilloes among them to keep the story roaring along.” That may be another reason for its popularity in the poll.
Howard-Johnson's first novel, This is the Place, has won eight awards. Harkening was recently has garnered three awards since its November release. The author’s work can be found in anthologies such as Pass Fail, The Joy of Cancer, Mothers of Authors, Musings: Authors Do it Write! and the new Feminine Writes published by the National Association of Women Writers. She is a columnist for The Pasadena Star News, Home Decor Buyer and MyShelf.com. She also writes occasional movie reviews for the Glendale News-Press.
