4. What is a POD?
This is a print-on-demand book. It is a paperback; a REAL book! It comes in trade paperback size, 5 x 7 inches. Hard Shell Word Factory has a contract with a major book distributor and a press company that is set up to do what is known as ‘demand printing.’ For example, let’s say you want a paperback copy of VALKYRIE. You can call or walk into your local bookstore and ask them to order VALKYRIE via Ingram’s (every bookstore knows distributor--it is the largest in the USA). They take your order, money and place it via Ingram’s. The distributor then sends the order, with your name and address, to the print-on-demand printer. The book is created within 24-48 hours, packaged with a beautiful cover, and sent directly to you via the post office. There is no difference between a POD and book you might buy off a store rack. The positives of this are many: books are printed only as they are ordered by the customer. The publisher does not incur heavy expense if the print run they ordered does not sell (which means costly loss of paper, loss of trees to our environment, as well as putting the unsold paperbacks into the garbage dump). When a customer wants the book, it is ordered or “on demand” (request by reader who wants to buy the book).
5. What is an E-book?
This is an electronic disk version of the paperback book. It can be bought in either a 3 1/2 inch floppy disk form, a CD-ROM form or downloaded directly into your computer from www.hardshell.com. The choice is yours. If you don’t want it downloaded and read from your computer, then you must have a device, a “reader” that you can slip your floppy disk or CD-ROM into.
