Arthur Goodbody, a young poet and museum guard, recovers slowly from the death of his beloved wife. As he makes plans to resume a full active life, a minor devil assaults him and makes promises that strike at Arthur's vulnerability. Arthur complies with the devil's wishes and resists him at the same time. He eventually looks for help in his fight against the being that oppresses him.
There have been many versions of the Faust legend. This one includes some of Arthur's poems, excerpts from his dreams about ancient Rome, passages from a diary he keeps in memory of his wife,, and a fictional memoir he writes about a 17th century theologian who also fought the devil. The story ends with a battle on a tropical island.
