Okay, it's only my local newspaper, but it was a big deal to me.
QUINCY -- Lisa Orban had never planned to write a story about her life. The Quincy woman loves to tell a story though and she eventually was prodded by friends and family to put her stories on paper.
The end result was her first book, which she named "It'll Feel Better When it Quits Hurting." The book was released last fall and has been getting solid reviews through Amazon. She will hold a book signing from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 18, at Quincy Books inside the Quincy Mall.
"(The book) didn't go exactly as I thought it was going to go," she said. "I had planned to write a series of short stories, clips of my life. But I realized as I was writing it that there was a lot more going on. It changed and evolved and morphed into what it is now."
Born in Galesburg, Orban moved to Quincy as a young child. She eventually became at odds with her parents as a teenager and was put into foster care when she was 16. Orban details what it was like to bounce from house to house for two years when she was in foster care. She eventually moved to Arizona when she aged out of the foster system. Orban eventually returned to Quincy when she was 21 and has been here since. The book takes readers through the first 20 or so years of her life before she makes the move back to the Gem City.
Those who have read the book have given positive reviews online.
"It seems to strike a chord with people," Orban said of the 277-page book.
Orban said she tried to use a special voice while writing the book.
"It's not written as an adult looking back at their childhood," she said. "I wrote it as if I was experiencing it from a viewpoint as a 9- or 10-year-old. I don't describe other people's motivations.
"I'm not always the hero of the story. I'm there and stumbling along and doing the best that I can. I'm laughing at a lot of the mistakes that I've made. I tell it in a very personal way, as if the person was sitting there next to me and I'm sharing it with a friend."
The book will be available for purchase at the signing. It also is available on Amazon in paperback or as an ebook.
Orban, 46, is already working on her second book, which she plans to call "Wine Comes in Six Packs."
