  As Mike and Jud were leaving, Mike said, "I know some guys that work over in Virginia, some little place called Dinkel Island. Went there once, but it was too quiet fer me. I'm gonna call one of them boys and see if he knows anything."

  Mike did call his Virginia buddy, a guy named Ben Wartman, who said he'd check around. That was the last anybody heard about Cybil and Tom for about a month. Then in November Mike got a call from Ben.

  "Y'all still looking for that Brewster guy and the girl he run off with?"

  "Sure are," said Mike. "Have you found 'em over there?"

  "Oh, yeah," said Ben. "But that ole boy's into lots more than running off with a girl. He's a thief. I seen him steal money real slick like right in a busy store. And that ain't all. I heard he was out begging for money to buy gas for that wreck of a boat he's got."

  "If he's that open about it, seems somebody woulda turned him in by now."

  "Maybe they have. I wouldn't know about that. I just know what I seen and heard about him. Your boss man willin' to pay for some more information?"

  "I can't speak for him, but it seems like he might. I ain't heard about no reward for findin' the girl."

  "I got a better idea," said Mike. "You just go tell the police where they are and stay out of it, man. You gonna git y'self messed up with some trouble if you go takin' things into your own hands."

  They batted that back and forth a minute then Ben said, "Okay, I'll stay out of it. I just thought you wanted to find 'em. If they is a reward and you change your mind, just let me know, y'hear?"

  Mike agreed and then hung up. He decided it didn't matter to him one way or the other, so he just let it go. He never said a thing about it to Tumble."
