The other night, my wife went to the store to get some veggies for the piggies. After shopping, she noticed some movement in a blanket that was inside of a shopping cart that had been placed next to our car.
Upon inspection, she found a cute and scared female guinea pig. She was immediately appalled at the situation, as it has been freezing at night lately.
Even with the Dollar Store wool blanket—as seen in the image above—I don't think she would've made it through the night.
We named her, Ruby Pearl, and when she got home, I noticed a small, pinkish-red spot on her back. We thought at first it was a wound, but it turned out to be something like Kool-Aid.
Her top front teeth are slightly crooked and yellowed, and her poops literally looked like peanuts. Same color, and they were very hard. They are almost back to normal now.
We looked into it and discovered that these are the first few symptoms of scurvy and malnutrition.
I have a theory that someone had two pigs, one of which died from these conditions, while they "donated" the other to my wife whom they recognized from her social media accounts named, .piggieverse.
I'm not defending what they did, because leaving any domesticated animal out in those conditions is just... well, it's not right.
It's important to know that these animals are not starter pets, despite what they will tell you at the store. They need a lot of attention, and a constant supply of hay and grains.
A guinea pig's metabolism is so efficient, that they can get sick at the flip of a switch, but likewise, get better with the same quickness.
Anyhow, so far Ruby has been a doll. She plinks quite a lot, and has quickly learned the precursor noises to veggie time, despite that we ring a bell prior to serving. She has a very loud wheek, and she is very friendly, letting us pet her even while in her cage.
I think she was loved, just not fed properly.
