During his career hiatus, Dr. Pherringer tries to revive his father's work: research into a theoretical layer of space called, 'quantum space'.
As he develops his theories, he discovers that time travel is possible, only, his first jump shows a desolate wasteland, full of unknown beings, none of which are Terran.
After more research, and a lot of trials and tribulations, he formulates a plan to save humanity, however, it's not as simple as one would think, provided that time travel is possible.
