HACK DIARY

I don't align myself with anybody else's description of me. Jean Paul Sartre My profession is to be free."George Sand We die of words. We are hanged, drawn, and quartered by dictionaries. Ralph Waldo Emerson To be captured in a category is an essential deprivation of personal freedom. Thomas Szasz
I have concluded my examination of the constitutions of the Kingdom of Hawaii and the history of the Sandwich Isles previous to their institution. I have also published several related articles along with a few accounts of my unforgettable experiences of several residences totaling over twenty-five years in the Hawaiian Islands.
I write to learn, and I like to share what I learn with people I believe may be interested. That was the main purpose of my study, from which the product is a series of notes taken, from which I plan on producing popular media renditions for the public if good fortune permits.
The work is admittedly dull in places for readers uninterested in details and such subjects as the development of constitutional law.
In fact, a frustrated friend of mine since 1970, who arrived in Hawaii from New York City a few months prior to my arrival there and eventually moved to Las Vegas, where he naturally misses Hawaii, took offense at what I believe is a balanced historical summary of Queen Liliuokalani’s reign, to say that he liked the Queen and the natives, as if I had defamed them, and characterized my work as a “hack diary.” He was mistaken, but I believe that might would be a good title for a magazine.
On the other hand, I renewed old acquaintances and made new ones, and I found all of the people I communicated with who actually live in Hawaii sincere, courteous, and helpful, which proves my notion that if you live in Hawaii it is best not to leave unless you cannot help it.
I presently live in South Miami Beach, a very pretty place, but I dream more and more of Hawaii, as if one can go home again, as if my life were flashing before me. Besides, the Great Flood is expected to swamp South Florida any day now.
My best friend here says I belong in Washington, D.C. She may be right. But I continue to dream, especially of Kona, something nebulous, about cutting back a 180-million dollar project, running mauka to makai, to 90-million dollars.
However that may be, I have wound up this part of my so-called Hack Diary, and I thank all of those who encouraged me and provided information and constructive criticism.
