I am not a commercial writer. I write to learn, and I love to share what I learn with people whom I may have interests in common no matter how arcane. Other than my love for Hawaii, that was my sole motive for writing the articles compiled in this book, which constitutes a constitutional summary of the Kingdom of Hawaii as a political entity and state of mind. I have entitled the book EA after the essential spirit of Hawaii, said by some to be the great white spirit of the islands, white because it inspires and embraces all the hues of the land and its peoples since the islands arose from the seas. Everyone who is born in or who sets foot in the islands are impressed by EA. They are all are tourists in the sense that our sojourn on this earth as individuals and as a race is momentary.
I have borrowed prodigiously from the works in the public domain for my summary, which I hope will be convenient for others who have no time nor patience to delve into the old stories. People who identify themselves as native Hawaiians may complain that those histories have a foreign prejudice, perhaps even an English and Christian bias forced upon native writers. I am only human and subject to my cultural education, so, yes, I admit to bias, and I am always interested in hearing all the stories. I am not a professed Christian, but if I were I would prefer Catholicism since it incorporates the older traditions.
The work is admittedly dull in places for readers uninterested in details and in such general subjects as the development of constitutional law. Even so, I have included ample tales about a unique multi-culture that might give the reader reason to rejoice in its difference from the continental humdrum and to sign up as an honorary subject of the Kingdom. Also included is information from my recent interviews of prominent native activist Mahealani Wendt.
