I ran away from New York and wound up in Hawaii in 1970, I left three times since then despite the advice of tourists to “never leave Hawaii.” It was good advice, in retrospect, although I do not hate Miami Beach.
An acquaintance from Hawaii saw me in South Beach, and asked, “What are you doing in this toilet?” “It's not so bad. Please get off it so I can sit down,” I jested.
Hawaii was always very good to me, but I felt I was missing something there that I could find on the continent. I never found what was missing.
The last time I left, in 2004, I told myself not to be so sad about my departure because I could always return. That has turned out not to be not true. The I Ching indicates that I shall at least die in Hawaii. That prospect was my motive for leaving. A man in California whose friends raised him money to move to Hawaii arrived at Honolulu airport and died in the restroom. I imagine he died of happiness. There are many thousands of people including Hawaiian natives who wish they could return to Hawaii . They have their own stories, mostly unwritten, so I dedicate mine to them, with hope that I shall have many more to tell one day. Aloha.
