I wrote this true story of my strenuous life and fearful ordeal while in the madhouse at Marshalsea, where I was cast in 1914 without a judicial hearing for demonstrating against the drug trade protected by the corrupt government of Pittsburgh that had addicted my boy Eddie. Mr. G. Brown Hill of Double Day Electric Company, a wealthy reformer and famous radio pioneer, stepped forward and hired the best lawyers to help me. I was finally discharged from the City Home for the Insane at Marshalsea by the federal court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, presided over by a fine judge who was appointed by President Woodrow Wilson on merit alone, one W. H. S. Thomson from Beaver County. That upstanding man rendered one of the most important decisions in Pennsylvania history when he declared unconstitutional the Insanity Act of June 26th, 1895, that allowed poor persons accused of petty crimes to be locked up for the rest of their lives in insane wards without a court hearing.
