According to Building a Noble World, p. 25, “If bad people cannot stop doing bad, why should good people stop doing good? Darkness is never removed by imposing a thicker darkness. To dispel darkness, we need to bring in light. Anger, greed, jealousy, hatred, and egoism are enemies of peace. In order to decrease evil or violence, the number of people evolving spiritually must increase.”
Pointing out that threats and punishments never prevent crime, Rama Tirtha (1873-1906), a brilliant mathematician and famous spiritual masterwrote: “Precepts, binding principles, artificial rules of conduct and unnatural morality will never cure matters. Remember that. ‘Thou shalt not do this’ and ‘Thou shalt do that’ will never bring about any reform. If these rules and these wise counsels could mend matters, the promised Kingdom of God would have been established long ago, the world would have been a heaven and not the kind of a world it is today. These will not cure matters. Your punishment, your jails and prisons will not improve matters. The world will have to realize, whether today or tomorrow, that it is a great blunder to believe in the efficacy or virtue of jails and prison-houses. Threats and punishments never prevented sin. In order to mend matters effectually, you will have to instill knowledge, culture, living knowledge, that is what is necessary. . . . Instead of keeping jails and prisons, you will have to teach the criminals, instruct them and acquaint them with the divine laws that govern the world.”
