THE TRIAL OF DAVY CROCKETT, Rhoden's first novella, presents a speculative dialogue between Crockett and Generalissimo Santa Anna, meeting in a clash of wit and will over the ideologies of the Texian Revolution and American expansionism.
Rhoden's novella breathes new, dramatic life into the ongoing debate over that legendary campaign.
"Who more embodies the skeptic of American expansionism than Santa Anna?" Rhoden asks. "And who better to defend it than the wily Crockett?"
But Rhoden's Crockett is no mere wily coyote.
"I present a Crockett and a Santa Anna beyond the established archetypes," says Rhoden, who also illustrated his novella. "Crockett is a wizened but embittered man, barely holding onto his last shred of faith in his government, unable to look away from his and his country's atrocities."
Rhoden presents Santa Anna no longer as a sterotypical mustache-twirling tyrant, but as a passionate advocate of Mexico's rights and well-being.
Neither man is deified or vilified and the opposing points of view are finally given fair and equal presentation in a dramatic context. While a work of fiction, THE TRIAL OF DAVY CROCKETT is based entirely on the facts of the revolution and should bring a new understanding of this myth-enshrouded campaign.
