BOOKLOVERS Club welcomes new members…..
The new reading/book club held its first meeting with over ten members attending, Mrs. Cathy Clark and Author/Poet Mona R. Adams founders of BOOKLOVERS welcomed each individual and introduced their guest of honor, Author Ethel Wayble Bovey who was such a delight reciting a poem from long ago and talking about the stories in her book Hometown Memories, Growing up in Martinsburg. What was to be a short meet and greet affair turned into a wonderful lesson on how it was in the past. Some members where amazed and loved commenting on Mrs. Bovey’s book.
Ms. Adams opened the meeting and introduced all the members giving her own touching stories to members. With a big grin she said it was because of her friend, Cathy she felt a reading club would be great to bring writers and readers together. She commented “we have so many wonderful authors in our area and what better way to join together those who read with those who write.” Mrs. Clark and Ms. Adams hopes this is just a beginning and others will feel welcome to join or attend any of the open discussions on book reading. At this time Booklovers has scheduled their meeting for the third Monday of each month at the Martinsburg Library and another selected book will be announced soon. Members’ comments were they would like to stay with reading books of our state or local areas then branch out to our country and include best sellers or what will bring interest to the club members.
Introducing the BOOKLOVERS Club was a little green worm, by the name of Billy the Bookworm.. So cute with his little glasses, the clubs signature logo and spokes person for the club. Billy the Bookworm sat smiling while welcoming all to the meeting. It is a future project that Billy Bookworm will come to life in the form of a puppet and help with children’s reading as well. So we of BOOKLOVERS hope Billy will return again to the clubs meetings.
Many interesting things were brought out as guest author Ethel Bovey and new member Carrol Kline, who is co-founder of Athens on The Opequon discussed half-soled shoes, the ration stamps of the depression and being sent to the store to get soup bones “You’d better bring back a little meat on that bone or your mother would be sending you back” Carrol said and the club laughed out loud. The members learn also of the Norwalk Antique Car Club and its history, of the many stores and theaters downtown. What a wonderful place Martinsburg must have been.
The story of the love of dollies and the special way you would care for then, as if they were your own children, to a little girl that was the life and even throughout the depression as a child you didn’t understand being poor, it was just your way of life and as the meeting finally came to an end I am sure members like Becky Pyle and her husband Palmer left with fond memories of the days gone by as well as all of the other members. One member Lou Ann Ponton told of her Dad’s grocery store and remembered fondly putting stamps on pages for her father, how her father heart would be concerned for the people whose stamps would run out way before the end of the month… almost sounds familiar in these troubled times but life will carry on as we all wish for our country to recover from all hardships we face.
And Cathy and Mona left with the feeling of goodness and thought; we are at a new beginning in our community and felt everything was right for a small moment in time. They thanked each other for the work done to bring this club to life and ever member for coming and welcomed them back in July to shared again another book and memories that may be lost without this new adventure called BOOKLOVERS.
