On Oct.17, 2002 one of New Times headlines was written and said, “The gutted shell of a home in Baltimore, Md., where five members of a family burned to death for tipping off police to drug crimes in the neighborhood, is a vivid reminder of a lost battle in the U.S. drug war.”(Join together para.1) In total seven people were killed two adult and five young children. The young man responsible for this horrendous crime and seven deaths was a 21-year-old name Darrell Brooks. He once was a promising young man with a bright future, now he represents the outcome of what happens when we as a society do not recognize a calling for help. I think Darrell Brooks was a prime candidate for aggression. I also think he fell in not one but, two of the six personalities. The first one would be the psychoanalytic approach: basic needs were met in a supportive home according the Personality fifty edition (p.8.) Another one that I think fit him would be the humanistic approach and it state in the book (Personality p.8) he would have overcome his aggressive tendencies.
The psychoanalytic approach focuses on the supportive home were all needs are met. (Person. p.8) In Darrell Brooks, case all needs were not met. His childhood was very hard at a young age. He grew up struggling in East Baltimore where he suffered physical abuse by a cocaine-addicted mother, abandonment by his father and the murder of his only brother, court records state. to act out in different ways by doing the things that he did. Before his current act of violence, Darrell as a child spent a “few years attending several programs for children with psychological or emotional problems” and at Villa Maria in Timonium where he attending grades fourth through seventh he was said to be the “class clown,” court records state. (Sunspot para.14) That shows some type of evidence that there was no attention given to him and a handicap that effect a lot of Americans youth the inability to express him self in other ways. This is not just a problem of just one perpetual race but us as a whole Country.
If a person receives a good amount of support and attention then they can overcome their aggressive tendencies, which is the humanistic approach. Darrell Brooks was on his way to overcoming his aggressive behavior because of the support he was receiving outside of his home from the community. Out of an article that was in The SUN new paper gave his work history he worked as a cook at Fuddruckers restaurant years before he had reached the legal working age, to help support his family. Then the City Council Persident Lawrence A. Bell hired Brooks. That the age of 15 years old he met Robert Stokes who was directing a city social service program at 1400E. Federal St. Stokes said quote “Brooks was a good –hearted but psychologically troubled kid.” Darrell also worked for Sheila Dixon in Oct. of 2000 to Jan. 19, 2001. Although Darrell Brooks was moving forward he had a couple infractions with the law, in Sept. 1998 he was criminally

charged with armed robbery, assault and theft. While working for Ms. Dixon, he was “known as a respectful and chatty clerk who had a comical streak.” (Sunspot para.25) Unfortunately a series of evidence turned him in the wrong direction. The Coast Guard rejected him, after that the city Council Staff helped get him a scholarship, but he dropped out, then he was a victim of an attempted murder when he was shoot in the foot. (para.36) A friend of Darrell Brooks, Octavia said that
“All Darrell ever wanted was somebody to sit down and listen,” she said. “Just like they have love for the people that died in that fire, people have love for Darrell. He had a good heart and he had a troubled childhood jus like a lot of people out here.”
What I think is that Darrell like other people before him and the people that come after him he, is a produce of his environment which mean what they hear, see and experience. I personally held us as society liable. There was a couple of chance to help him, but they stuck him back into the glue incurred that type of behavior so he made little or no progress. He was clear a person with no support in is house, but all the things he had to go through he almost pulled him out of that glue. Regrettably for the lack of proper help to correct the problem from the beginning the outcome of his life was loss as well as a family of seven.
