The RWA Chapter of Carolina Romance Writers offers a Point of View Online Class in January 2009. Kathleen Rowland will teach with her video-camera-on-the-head technique to look through characters'' eyes, use their voices, and feel their moods. Students in the class are encouraged to use their works-in-progress for individual critiques.
Kathleen Rowland is convinced that for commercial fiction, switching point of view (POV) within a scene translates is one of the two most common reasons a manuscript is rejected. Editors call it head bobbing. Point of view is one of fiction writing’s most difficult elements to master. Once you have learned it, you will never read another book with quite the same innocent enjoyment. But until that light bulb goes on, you don’t have a clue to the horrors you’re missing.
Kathleen will guide you on the topic of viewpoint, giving you individual feedback. Your character sees specific things and is grounded with impressions. He or she sees, thinks, hears, touches, smells, tastes, and may be in an emotional predicament. All the while the viewpoint character makes a powerful bond with the reader. Perhaps the character is mistaken and doesn't know it.
In the class Kathleen will explore the POV advantages of first-person, omniscient, third-person, and single-multiple points of view (with third person). You will decide what point of view is best for your story. Whose scene should it be? Who is facing the biggest challenge? Who will the reader want to root for and who will be changed the most when your story ends?
It will be fun to experiment. Once point of view is conquered, a writer's work takes on strength and sophistication. Ideally, this will lead to a successful writing career.
