33 HOURS IN JAIL LEAD TO A LIFETIME OF LEARNING
Local Atlanta Lesbian Bases New Book on Personal Experiences
Roswell, GA (August 10, 2006) – Sharon Smith was an inmate at the Roswell Detention Center in Roswell, Georgia. Smith was arrested, fingerprinted, photographed, and held on misdemeanor charges of harassment. The charges were filed by her former wife who Smith threatened to sue for slander and defamation when it was discovered that she intentionally slammed Smith’s character with vicious rumors that were not true and refused to apologize. For thirty-three hours, Smith was deprived of her freedom as she waited to be released on a $2,500 bond. During this period of time, Smith thought about the reasons she was imprisoned and what, if anything, she was supposed to learn from this experience. After carefully thinking things through, Smith decided to write about her experiences that occurred in the weeks, months, and years prior to her unfortunate arrest.
Love and Liberation, a non-fiction book published in 2007 and released June 29th through the online content marketplace Lulu.com, is about the challenges and the situations that lesbians and bisexuals face in their intimate relationships with one another. It is also about the things all lesbian and bisexual women need to learn in order to maintain healthy relationships. The book begins with a description of the entity we call “Love,” which is personified as a powerful Goliath capable of controlling your every move. The book then goes into a thought-provoking and illustrative look at the author’s childhood and early adolescent experiences. Smith discusses how past relationships have played important roles in how she now interacts with people. Smith goes on to discuss important conflicts dealing with homophobia, politics, and religion. Love and Liberation ends with another description of “Liberation” and how it, too, is important for healthy relationships.
Smith felt it was necessary to share her experiences with other women so that they would not have to endure some of the things she went through and to learn from some of the mistakes she made. She wanted lesbians and bisexual women to be empowered to take control of their relationships and have the courage to make difficult decisions. Smith admits that being imprisoned was one of the best things to happen to her because it taught her patience and renewed her faith in something other than herself and the women in her life. She said that as she sat down to write, “Every emotion that I held inside came out like a tidal wave. It just felt right.”
Smith says that she initially just wanted to write a fictional novel based on imaginary characters in an imaginary time and place. However, she admits that when she started writing, real feelings of pain, anger, and betrayal emerged. Someone, she lamented, needed to learn from this. Smith has plans to write subsequent books dealing with homophobia in the Black community, lesbian erotica, and short stories.
