Local Author Miriam L. Jacobs Reads Her Children's Book At The Literacy Center
Miriam L. Jacobs is a local author and has her own publishing company, Candalyse Publishing. Miriam is a mother and grandmother, lives in Smallwood, NY and is raising her granddaughter, Candace.
Her children's book, "My Name is Not Monkey Girl", is written as a result of her experiences with her granddaughter, Candace. Candace was born with a rare congenital facial skin disorder called Giant Congenital Nevus. It is a very large hairy mole that covered half her face. One in 250,000 babies is born with this condition that has no known cause and has no cure. The only treatment is through numerous plastic surgeries.
As a baby and small child, Candace endured ridicule, stares, and frightened reactions. One of Candace's experiences was in the local post office when another child called her monkey girl, thus the title of Miriam Jacobs' book.
This book is about tolerance and understanding. Simply told, the book communicates exceptionally well the need for children and adults to realize that beauty come from within, that we are all the same on the inside.
The book gives parents the opportunity to teach their children compassion and to accept differences, not fear them.
Candace is now a fourth grader and has had many surgeries and requires more.
She still looks different, and other children and adults still notice and stare. Her classmates accept Candace for who she is on the inside and actually have become protective of her.
Miriam L. Jacobs will read "My Name is Not Monkey Girl" at the Read It Again Bookstore, located in The Literacy Center at 63 North Street in Monticello, on Saturday, December 6th at 11:00 a.m. She will be available to sign her book and to provide information about this rare skin disorder.
Miriam would be the first to explain how much she has learned about tolerance and love from her granddaughter. The book sells for $10 and all proceeds go to finance Candace's next surgery. Miriam's book is appropriate for children age six and older.
