         Awards Vincent Beach Book Most Prestigious Honor

(July 14, 2008) - The 2008 Carter G. Woodson Award (secondary level) for "the most distinguished social science book appropriate for young readers that increases understanding of ethnicity in the United States" goes to Five Star Publications' Don't Throw Away Your Stick Till You Cross the River-The Journey of An Ordinary Man by Vincent Collin Beach. The author and his wife, Anni, will accept the award at the 88th NCSS Annual Conference in Houston, Texas, November 14 through 16, where they will participate in a panel discussion and book-signing. Approximately 4,000 members of the 25,000-member association are expected to attend.

Young people will find within the story many opportunities to reflect on cultures, historical events, the complexities of everyday life, and perseverance. The book, which is written in short, easy-read chapters and peppered with photographs, appeals to young people as well as adults who have lived through their own eventful lives. Kenneth R. Hill, CMSgt (Ret.) USAF, describes Beach's autobiography as "a truly inspirational, courageous, and motivational book filled with the reality of the life of a black man." He adds that, "The subtitle should be more appropriately changed to read, 'An Extraordinary Journey of an Extraordinary Man.'"

Arizona State Representative Mark Anderson says Beach's book is, "an insightful and uplifting look into a life well-lived. The Vincent Beach story holds your attention and tugs at your heart."
