Fear of the Unknown: No one knows what the future holds. Explain a time where you persevered in spite of your fear of the unknown. Fear of the Unknown is a very broad term. It can be big questions like what happens after death or dealing with basic day to day realities and not knowing what is lurking behind the corner.
Fear Under Control: A time when fear controlled you and what you did to overcome it. A piece that gets to the essence of what fear does to you or a character you created.
Existence, Consciousness, Reality: Essays or Stories that offer thought provoking theories about existence, consciousness or reality. Questions you might ask yourself after seeing movies like: Avatar, Memento, Contact, The Matrix, Being John Malcovich, Vanilla Sky, The Truman Show, etc.
Mortality as a source of motivation. Write a story or essay about how having limited time to live motivates you to achieve your goals.

The editors say, "We have no hard-and-fast editorial guidelines, because science fiction is such a broad field that I don't want to inhibit a new writer's thinking by imposing Thou Shalt Nots." This magazine pays 6-8 cents per word, up to $600.
3. Gray's Sporting Journal is a high-end hunting and fishing magazine—"think Field & Stream meets The New Yorker." As such, the editors warn, "If some aspect of hunting or fishing isn't at the core of the story, it has zero chance of interesting Gray's." This magazine pays $600-1,000 for stories of 1,500-12,000 words.
Subtropics is the literary magazine published 3 times a year from the University of Florida. The editors advise, "You'll see that we don't publish science fiction, fantasy, genre fiction, or anything with talking animals." This magazine pays a flat fee of $1,000 for stories ($500 for short shorts).
