The central issues of both novels are strong traditional family values, and the "true" Christian ethic. Both novels were written at the same time; one to show the good and the other, the evi. "Fill My Eyes" presented the more complex side and does not contain these values. It is a novel of extremes and a possible scenario of what might happen when these important virtures become non-existent.

"The Backside Of Yesterday" is a novel of The Great Depression. After writing it, little did I realize how close we came to repeating this bleak chapter in American history. The novel is about children who find escape from not only the harsh realities of daily living, but also having to deal with a mysterious death of a beloved family member, then being ostracized from their close-knit neighborhood due to narrow-minded gossip. The book will appeal to young adults. They will be able to relate to the main character who is leaving childhood innocense behind. Older adults can easily identify with the children's universal daily activities. The book will provide some nostalgia and hopefully, temporary escape from the problems we are coping with today that are so reflective of The Depression.
