Lorraine L. Geiger Donates Copy of Her Book, Trouble at the Blueberry Patch to Library

The Highlands County Library System has a new book amidst its shelves after the donation of Trouble at the Blueberry Patch by author Lorraine Geiger. The book designed for children age nine and older is a hair-raising tale of the adventures of two teenager cousins. The cousins fall into serious trouble while investigating suspicious activities discovered at an abandoned barn while enroute to collect blueberries.
Besides this book Geiger has finished fourteen picture books, four of which are currently being considered by publishers. She is an accomplished poet, having won at least seventy-five prizes for her work.
Ideas for Trouble at the Blue Berry Patch began when Geiger was only 14. She penciled the story and then realized that a manuscript should be typed. Living in a rural community before computers, she could not find even one typewriter in the neighborhood.
One day while shopping in the toy department of a store in a nearby city, she found a toy typewriter. To type, one selected a key and turned a knob which then printed that one letter. Geiger purchased the toy and set to typing her story. After managing to produce 58 pages, she decided this too much for her. The story lay forgotten for several years.
After school, college, marriage and five children, Geiger began to think again of her joy in writing. She remembered how much pleasure she found in writing for her high school English class. She joined a writing club, studied writing and the publishing process then settled into serious production of stories and poetry. The support of instructors, friends and relatives kept her inspired to continue writing and strive for improvement. Remembering her story of the blueberry trouble, she began the long rewrite process to develop the story. It bubbles with teenage enthusiasm and descriptions that teenagers and adults alike will find fascinating. The reader becomes involved in story of the lost children and wonders if they will every find their way home.
Geiger grew up in Newfoundland, Canada with seven brothers and sisters. She met Kenneth Geiger, a sailor, at the Argentia Naval Base in Newfoundland and they were married nearly two years later. Kenneth served five and one-half years in the United States Navy and was involved in the Cuban blockade during the Cuban Crisis.
The Geigers moved to Haines City, Florida in 1966 to be near his family. They made their home in Sebring in 1968.
Lorraine has always been involved in the family businesses of alligator farming and leather products, yet found time to maintain her family home, house foreign exchange students each year for almost eighteen years and still be an accomplished writer. She earned a pilot’s license as well.
