My new major non-fiction book is called The Mysterious World of the Human Genome. It deals with what I, as a gold medallist doctor and scientist, have been working with for 20 years. Your genome lies at the very core of your being. If there is anything in your life that is sacred, it is this. But advances in science are now about to deliberately engineer the human genome for the first time. In fact they have already begun. Do you want to understand what is happening?
My guess is you do. So I, who brought you The Forgotten Plague (book of the year for the NY Times), and Virus X (front page review in the Washington Post), which explained what plagues, such as HIV-1, were really about, am now bringing you the big one - the history of your own genome. Nothing in your life will be more important to you and your family.
I have deliberately written it so that an intelligent non-scientist can understand from the very beginning. We go on a journey through the landscape of the genome, aided by a steam train, and at the end of it, we have a pretty good grasp of what the genome is made of, how it works its extraordinary wonders, and what might be at stake in the future.
