Ian Irvine (Hobson) will present a talk/workshop on several tropes found in Quantum Fiction and Speculative Fiction sub-genres (e.g. Sci Fi, Horror and Fantasy). Drawing on various stories featuring “Simulated Realities” and “Parallel Worlds/Selves”, as well as Ian’s recent novel The City of Quartz, participants will be guided through a number of exercises exploring these tropes. After discussing Nick Bostrom’s proposal that we might already be living inside a high fidelity computer simulation (a kind of “Earth 2017”), participants will debate whether such a simulation might be seen as a literary-multimedia masterpiece created some time after the year 2300CE.

Author Bio: Dr Ian Irvine
Ian Irvine (Hobson) has had poems, stories, novels, articles/essays and nonfiction books published since the late 1990s. He currently teaches writing and editing at Bendigo Kangan Institute (Bendigo) and Victoria University (Melbourne). He is also co-founder of the Zoetics Institute, (‘Creativity for Meaningful Change’) and has co-edited three publications: The Animist (7 editions), Painted Words (13 editions) and Scintillae 2012.
