Here's a just released well-written review for Milijun from the On Line Book Club
At the start of Milijun by Clayton Graham, Laura and her son Jason embark on a much needed, seemingly ordinary vacation. However, fate and unlikely circumstance turn what should be a peaceful camping adventure into a life or death situation after fourteen year old Jason captures the image of an extra-terrestrial on his camera. Shockingly, Jason is then captured and examined by one of the strange beings. After reuniting with her son, the pair become unlikely suspects in a murder investigation. While attempting to outrun the law, Laura and Jason stumble upon some peculiar allies at a little known place called Milijun. Along the way, Jason becomes instrumental in an alien plan to create a hybrid, human-alien race. Will Laura and Jason join forces with those at Milijun to stop the alien mission? Or do the people of Milijun have a different plan for the two?
Milijun is a fast paced, yet thoughtful story. From the very beginning there is a sense of suspense as the reader questions the motives of both the invading aliens and the different human factions that encounter the extra-terrestrials. The main plot, though not entirely unique, contains enough distinctive characteristics to make this book standout in the sci-fi genre. Further, the scientific explanations of futuristic technology and alien biology proved to greatly enhance the plausibility of the story. Even more successful is the way in which the author relays the scientific information. All explanations are provided in an easy to understand manner; thankfully this book is not bogged down by technical jargon.
The characters are what make Milijun a truly interesting and convincing tale. Laura and Jason, the unsuspecting citizens that are pulled into the alien events by surprise, are both agreeable and well developed. At only 14, Jason is eager to be a part of the events surrounding the aliens; on the other hand, Laura only wants to return to vacation with her son and wishes they had nothing to do with the shocking events. As the story progresses, and Jason’s role in the alien’s plan becomes more significant, the character aptly evolves. We see a shift in Jason’s thought process, dialogue, and actions as he becomes critical to the survival of both humans and aliens. Similarly, Laura changes her tune as she witnesses her son begin to transform.
Additionally, the secondary characters are just as well thought out as Laura and Jason. Many of the characters toe the line between right and wrong, making them come across as human. Milijun encompasses a wide variety of people, from military personnel and scientists to “average Joes.” Each character’s actions can be explained by their personal circumstance, and no character felt inherently good or evil which added to the realistic quality of the individuals.
In Milijun, the author succeeds in creating an unpredictable story with an equally unpredictable cast of characters. The twists and turns regarding motives of both the humans and aliens keep the story moving along at a fast rate. This book easily earns 4 out of 4 stars. Any fans of science fiction will appreciate the intriguing technology and curious alien motives found in this story.
