SUMMARY
Sexual abuse and child molestation are rampant in the world, hidden behind ugly and pretty closed doors; so is mental and physical abuse. It's time someone hits back because the courts in Small Town, La. let child predators go free. Pilar Grace is an intelligent 13-year-old, but she's innocent and living with her dominant and illiterate aunt and uncle. She's mature for her age but there's nothing much a girl of 13 can do to defend herself when she was raised getting used to abuse, so she reads books and cuts herself to cope. Someone needs to help her, but who can step in and stop the madness when almost the whole damn town is like a small Sodom and Gomorrah?
Pilar Grace is taken from her mother at birth by her insanely jealous sister, Dill. Pilar is physically and mentally abused from birth by her Aunt Dill, and no one knows in the secluded place they live in called Small Town. It's her 13th birthday and her illiterate Uncle Jack tells her it's time for her to earn her keep around the house by making men happy. Small Town is part of a child sex ring that's operated by Mr. Boss. Pilar is an innocent child of such activities. All she knows about life is what she reads in fantasy library books and school magazines. She's not allowed to go anywhere, and she can never cross the old bridge to go on the other side of the bayou, except on the school bus. She begins cutting herself to cope at the age of 8. She cut to cope until a girl named Becky took up for her and stood up against her school bullies. How will Pilar's life end up with the help of Becky and an old lady fortune teller they meet in New Orleans? Will Pilar Grace be a victim, a static, or a survivor?
