The head of the law firm David Johnson engaged to handle his case tried to shake him down for $1,621. He refused to pay and complained to The Florida Bar, one of the worst integrated bar associations in several states cursed by this monopolistic form of organization because it leaves lawyers responsible for their own discipline as they rule the legislative, judicial, and administrative branches of government.
Indeed, The Florida Bar, the regulatory arm of Florida's Supreme Court, has proven to be more concerned with protecting miscreant lawyers than their clients, doing the minimum to reign in miscreant members; that is, unless money, the sacrament for which the litigating profession tends to exist instead of justice, is obviously embezzled from a client's trust account.
Thus began Johnson's persecution at the hands of a lawyer and his wily father-and-law, mastermind of a shakedown racket involving dozens of clients, while the notorious bureaucratic ass sat on its hands.
Johnson, a man of principle, rebelled and fought the unprincipled lawyers like a tiger for many years, at the cost to him of hundreds of thousands of dollars and continuous anguish to his family. His struggle is nothing less than heroic. One might fairly say that he fought the law and he won.
He did the public considerable good in the process, although his victory, in terms of what good it did him besides personal vindication, was somewhat Pyrrhic in the final analysis.
