Hard at work on 19th century Delaware book

You've certainly heard the song. You may have even sung it yourself. "We Shall Overcome" got its start in Delaware.

The Reverend Charles A. Tindley wrote "I'll Overcome Some Day" in 1900, when he was an elder of the Methodist Episcopal church for the Wilmington, DE District. This church, the Zoar M.E. Church in Odessa, was one of the churches Tindley preached at regularly at that point in his career.

The song went through not only a title change, but various lyric changes and tune changes to get to the version we recognize.

The song took on a life of its own after the civil rights protests of the 1960s, and has been sung at protest movements in China, Northern Ireland, South Korea, Lebanon, and parts of Eastern Europe.
