Savannah, GA (USA)––Local Author Day in Savannah Georgia, in recent years has become an event which celebrates the importance which authors like Aberjhani, a native of city, hold for regional communities as well as the significance which another native author, Flannery O’Connor (March 25, 1925 - Aug 3, 1964), holds for various readers around the around.
Author-artist Aberjhani has written essays, composed poetry, and created fine art all as explorations of what has been referred to as “the mystery of Flannery O’Connor.” While he has participated in Local Author Day in the past by autographing books in person, this year he is participating in the event by releasing a new eBook edition of Greeting Flannery O’Connor at the Back Door of My Mind. The title will be available as a free download from March 23 - March 26, 2025.
The annual event is hosted by The Book Lady Bookstore and the Flannery O’Connor Childhood Home Foundation. It features dozens of authors signing and selling their works in the city’s downtown Lafayette Square. It also includes a parade around the square with musicians and marchers dressed up as characters from O’Connor’s fiction, and observance of the iconic author’s birthday: March 25. This year marks the 100th anniversary of O’Connor’s birth and commemorations of it are taking place across the globe.
“As controversial as her works might remain for a lot of people,” said Aberjhani, “just as many still draw a great deal of inspiration from both her writings and the way she overcame crippling disability to produce them. As a Black man from the same town as O’Connor, I struggled to expand my understanding of her work, and that struggle led to the publication of the first edition of Greeting Flannery O’Connor at the Back Door of My Mind back in 2019/2020.”
He added that, “Now we’re here in the centennial of her birth––the same year we’re observing the centennial of Malcolm X’s birth––and I’ve just published on Amazon an eBook edition of the book. By way of full disclosure, there are some formatting items I hope Amazon will help my tech-angels improve later on but I think most people will enjoy the stories in Greeting Flannery enough to move past those for now.”
The Savannah Local Author Day will be observed on March 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. in the downtown Historic District’s Lafayette Square. It is free and open to the public.
