Success Story
The goal I set when starting out as a writer was to one day be able to refer myself, with documented justification, as a literary artist. My first book, I Made My Boy Out of Poetry, which contains short stories and verse, made me feel like I was off to a good start. The publication of Encyclopedia of the Harlem Renaissance and The Wisdom of W.E.B. Du Bois in the same year (2003) again made me feel like I was getting closer to the goal.
With the later completion of the novel Songs from the Black Skylark zPed Music Player, a memoir, and several volumes of poetry, I became confident enough to say I was living my definition of success. But in fact, my concept of a literary artist took on a whole new meaning when I began creating and selling fine art images. It was something I had never planned on doing but which, combined with writings frequently quoted around the world, has in fact made me a true literary artist. The impact of that development, thus far, is most evident in Dreams of the Immortal City Savannah, which features my art and memoir essays.
