Dear Readers,

Those of you who have attended one of my workshops on Teaching the Bible to Children know that I am concerned about Bible literacy among young people today. I'd like to see each of us commit to doing more to ensure that children know the Bible stories and know why we turn to the Bible for inspiration, healing, and direction.

One small step I have taken towards this end recently was to write a Bible literacy quiz with 25 questions for www.BibleWise.com. You can see it in the Kids Korner section under Fun and Games. It's interactive, and I hope both educational and enjoyable. There are questions about the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, the nativity story, Moses, Joseph and the coat of many colors, David and more.

While I am on the topic of Bible quizzes, I want to pass along information about three others. The Jesus Institute website (www.Jesus-Institute.org) has three interactive Bible quizzes in a section called, Test Your Knowledge. They are labeled easy, intermediate and difficult. Each test only includes 10 questions, so taking the quizzes is quick, informative and FUN! The questions are appropriate for young people or adults. From the Home page, simply click on the Site Map. One of the questions I missed when I took these three quizzes had to do with the Roman historian, Tacitus. Here's information from the Jesus Institute site about him:

"Cornelius Tacitus was a Roman historian who lived circa 56-120 AD. He is believed to have been born in France or Gaul into a provincial aristocratic family. He became a senator, a consul, and eventually governor of Asia.

"Tacitus wrote at least four historic treatises. Around 115 AD, he published Annals in which he explicitly states that Nero prosecuted the Christians in order to draw attention away from himself for Rome's devastating fire of 64 AD. In that context, he mentions Christus who was put to death by Pontius Pilate."
