Last week I wrote about reading and the creative venture we are on.

I'd like to add a couple of thoughts on this topic again this week.

READ IN SMALL CHUNKS

We're all so very busy these days. Our lives are a roller coaster of mad rushes to finish projects, start new ones, attend to lingering issues that need our attention.

But now that you've accepted the essential nature of reading to your creative growth (at least I hope you have), the next question arises: who has time?

Last issue I told you of my simple plan. I read every night before retiring. It works for me.

But regardless of your own reading schedule, let me remind you that a creative reading program can be accomplished with small reading breaks over the course of the day. Look for brief periods---just 5 or 10 minutes---where it is not necessary that you even finish an article or chapter. These short breaks can still fuel inspiration and insight from a wide variety of material.

In your short breaks do read from a wide variety of sources. Think of it as a snack, rather than a full meal.The more diverse the resources you encounter the more pleasure you'll achieve and the larger the database of potential ideas and knowledge you'll accrue.

Let chance guide you, too.

The late Buckminster Fuller---author, architect, engineer, and famed designer of the geodesic dome---made a habit of purchasing whatever magazine was in the upper right hand corner of whatever newstand he stopped at. In this way, he made sure he exposed himself to new ideas and perspectives, and unusual, offbeat information.

This is all fuel for the subconsious and can find its way into your current project whether art or businss related.

This kind of "fringe reading", reading you would not otherwise choose, contributes to your personal repository of cultural software and can assist you the next time you confront a crises, problem, or opportunity.

For CREATORS, diversity is king!

Most people limit their concept of reading to books, magazines, and newspapers, but there is a wide range of other sources from which to charge your creative batteries including:

1. BOOKS ON TAPE

2. NEWSLETTERS

3. DIGESTS

4. ON LINE CLIPPING SERVICES

5. MULTIMEDIA REFERENCE WORKS

6. DIRECT MAIL

7. FOREIGN MATERIALS

8. CARTOONS, DRAWINGS and even COMIC BOOKS

Next time I'll look at each of these alternatives with an eye out for how we can apply what we read to our lives as CREATORS. I'll also discuss the importance of remaining open to synchronicity & serendipity when we read.
