Note from Carolyn

Dear Subscribers:

Publicity is like the little waves you make when you toss pebbles into a lake. The waves travel, travel, travel and eventually come back to you, but if you stop lobbing little stones, you lose momentum. I can’t tell you how many authors I’ve seen give up on flinging those promotion stones into a pond just about the time they would start to see results if they stuck with it.
I was reminded of this metaphor (one that I repeat often!) recently when someone tweeted their choice for the top ten books on editing. It included my The Frugal Book Editor (www.budurl.com/TheFrugalEditor) and it is an ongoing list from Thornton Publishing. Here is the tweet:

passivillionare #Publishing voted best book: http://ping.fm/bMnCb The Frugal Editor: Put Your Best Book Forward to Avoid Humiliation and Ensure Success e - Book

I am glad that the principals of that company understand that a sound knowledge of editing (and clean submissions!) help them produce more professional books and that Thornton is making an effort to help their authors do a better job of that necessary partnering process.

That this came up, also gives me a chance to remind you that it’s never too late and it’s never too early to promote. And that you can’t let your efforts lag. Rearrange your thinking. Marketing isn’t about a single book. It’s about building a career. And new books can build on the momentum created by an earlier book. If you keep the faith. So, review the marketing ideas in The Frugal Book Promoter (www.budurl.com/FrugalBkPromo) for new promotion ideas if you are tiring of the old ones, rearrange your schedule a bit to find the time, and keep at it.

Happy Writing, Editing and Promoting
Carolyn

Your Reviews: Crediting and Credibility
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

QUESTON:

Dear Carolyn,

I have been reviewing newly released books (and enjoying it very much). I think my reviews are well done and fair. At the end of the review I write, "Reviewed by Holly Weiss, author of Crestmont." Where allowed (only on Amazon), I post a link to Crestmont.

I thought it was the industry standard for authors to list their books when reviewing to give credence to their status as an author reviewer. However, recently, I received a criticism that it appeared I was trying to promote my own book, not the one being reviewed. The author of the book The Other Life, Ellen Meister, was thrilled with my review. When you read the review, you will see that there is nothing in it about my book, only Ms. Meister’s.

Am I following industry standard here, or, in your opinion, am I off track?

This is the only criticism of this nature I have received from any of the twenty - two reviews I have posted. I want to remain professional, but, in addition, would like to be known for the book I've written. I am very new to the industry and respect your opinion. Can you give me some guidance?

Thank you so much for your help.

Best wishes,
Holly Weiss, author of Crestmont,
http://www.hollyweiss.com
http://twitter.com/HWeissauthor
"Crestmont is a fine and riveting read for historical fiction fans, highly recommended.” —Midwest Book Review

ANSWER:

I agree with you, Holly. And you are backed by the experts. The LA Times for instance, uses a credit line in the reviews in their Calendar section. It often gives the title of a book written by the reviewer. So does The New Yorker, one of the greatest magazines of all time (in my humble opinion!). Most feel that a book published by the author of an article (or a review), gives that review more credibility.

If you'd like to know more about writing reviews as part of your platform and career, check out Mayra Calvani's The Slipper Art of Book Reviewing, www.budurl.com/Reviewing.

One word of caution, though. Though Amazon provides the link capability, they have very strict rules governing credits. And they change all the time. So you might want to check their guidelines or go back and remove the live link to your book. But I certainly wouldn’t remove your mini biography or your title.

One other suggestion, double - check the automatic link that Amazon provides when people add content to their site. There is a way to include your title there as well, and that link goes back to your Amazon profile page.

Say That Again! Why does Twitter Work? ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

QUESTON:

Fran Silverman asked me to respond to Twitter questions from a journalist for CarolRoth.com.
Fran is an author/on - line publicist and radio host. She has gotten her 180 clients on hundreds of radio shows and is author of sixteen e - books full of resources that authors need to know before contacting talk radio show hosts. The descriptions and prices are at http://www.talkradioadvocate.com
ANSWER:
Used right Twitter can:

1. drive huge amounts of traffic to your blog and Web site. It's a matter of reaching your Twitter followers but also of interconnecting Twitter with your other social networks.

2. get you radio and other gigs. It's a matter of networking.

3. help you make direct - sales pitches because they are not something frowned upon on Twitter as they are at other social networks. (Though there are some techniques for keeping these kinds of tweets friendly and caring.)

BTW, when it's used correctly, Twitter is a great learning/information gathering experience. You may want to check out Frugal and Focused Tweeting (www.budurl.com/Tweeting4Retailers) . It's written for retailers, but authors are also retailers. We sell books. And the essentials are the same. To make the transition, one must just substitute “author” for “retailer” as one reads.

How Do You Get A Review on The New Book Review?
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Question

Hi Carolyn,

Please let me know the process to submit a book for review to your site. Or do we post independently to the reviewers listed on your site?

Best regards,

Martin Carriere, Author
Carrying the Chalice Forward and Other Secret Stories of North America

Answer:

Martin, thank you for taking the time to ask. I assume we're talking about The New Book Review, right? (www.TheNewBookReview.blogspot.com). The submission guidelines are in the left column of that blog. As you can see, the reviews come to me and I post them. But you can also research reviewers on that blogsite and query them individually. I have no idea how many people do that, but I always hoped writers would use it as a resource for that purpose. It’s also good for finding names of alternative publishers. And, of course, good books to read.
Best,
ChJ

From Carolyn’s Coming Memoir/NotACookbook

Here’s How I Don’t Cook ©

This is a short excerpt from a chapter that I thought all of you—even those who have never had to clean a fridge—could relate to. Just so you know, Lance is my husband and has been for a long, long, long time. ( - :

My cooking urges—few—are discouraged by fridge - shelf trolls, crisper elves, and the leftovers from Lance's shopping sprees at Whole Foods. Horizon natural milk wets its bottom leaving residue that peels from acrylic shelves like sunburned skin. Unidentified veggies leak something akin to the cracked platelets of mudflats in the drawer designed to keep them fresh.

Mudflats are my cue more than the peeling milk. Because if the gunk looks like mudflats, I begin to think of it as, well . . . aged. The fridge needs cleaning.

That's when I make soup.

Everything has begun to look like crêpe paper. Crinkles are growing around the potatoes’ eyes. Apricots are aging. Celery has grown new, pale green sprouts in a dark corner but the outside stalks are getting scummy. Carrots are sad and limp. Even apples are shriveling. In the old days, carrots and apples lasted forever. People kept them all winter in a dirt cellar.

That's from one shelf only. And, no, I don't always put veggies in the crisper drawer designed to keep them crisp.

I do, however, work to make sure my family doesn’t notice that the soup isn't fresh. My soup is sometimes served with leftover popcorn from the movies. They're like fluffy croutons, my attempt at creativity . . . and disguise. Cumin and red pepper spice up the mix in the pot so no one will notice that nothing is fresh.
But after the first meal of soup, the rest of it begins to evaporate in the refrigerator, too. What's the word that gourmet cooks use? Reduce. Yes, soup reduced to dry cakes in the bottom of the pan. There must be some reason the leftovers don't get warmed up. . . .

- - - - -
Watch for my memoir (Here's How I Don't Cook), now being shopped by super - agent Terrie Wolf. And keep your fingers crossed for her success. Please!
