Dear Subscribers:

Intellectual me always reads the Ask Amy column in the LA Times. I have been reading that column since Amy's mother (or aunt—can't remember which) wrote a similar column in the late 1950s. It was my job to edit it down to fit the column inches we had available in what was called the society section back in those days. I learned a lot about life and common sense from Ann Landers then and some of it took. Today Amy had some wise nuggets for authors and other booky people, believe it or not.

Anyway, I was inspired, so I thought I'd pass one of those ideas on to you. She suggests the perfect gift or perfect is one that begins a tradition. She suggests you wrap a book on Christmas Eve (or any holiday evening that is special to you, religious or not) and put it where Santa is likely to find it. Then it is Santa's job to deliver the book to the bed of a child so it is the first gift he or she sees on Christmas morning. She suggests that the book needn't be new; it can be well worn, one you love or have loved yourself. I might add that I can see no reason why only children should be the recipients of a gift that can mold memories and lives.

Amy claims she borrowed the idea from historian David McCullough, another author who we can be pretty sure understands the value of a good book in the lives of the ones we love.

Amy says the recipient will "awaken to a gift that will far outweigh any toy: literacy." She also says, "...avid readers know that if you have a book, you are never alone."

I imagine that we could substitute a note in a Christmas card that sends recipients to an e - book, too. But somehow it doesn't feel as…well…solid. My librarian aunt sent library - bound books to my children for special occasions of all kinds and I often get lots of pleasure by digging them from my archives and sending those books to them now they are married with children of their own. As I said, memories.

PS: One of my favorite books—one that influenced my creative writing—is Anna Karenina. I just saw the movie and I hope you'll go see it for artistic inspiration. It is difficult to translate a book that can peek into the thoughts of its characters to a visual medium we must interpret from only what we see. This film uses the magic of a play and stage props to add more insight. The possibilities for metaphor are intriguing. I left wanting to be a better writer…and very moved.
