Subject: [Sharing with Writers] How to Start A Column, Punctuations and More!

(My apologies for this *generic wrap" newsletter. AOL was giving me fits this morning. I know the color and fonts are more fun! (-: )

October 3, 2005 Sharing with Writers:

From the Desks

Of Carolyn Howard-Johnson and Friends

Most recent issues of Sharing with Writers posted at FairgoeBooks: http://www.angelfire.com/electronic/fairgoebooks/literaryfour.htm and you will find the *Best of Sharing with Writers* at www.ApollosLyre.com. Sharing with Writers is the official newsletter of Authors* Coalition, an organization of writers who help writers.

Note: In order to cut down on computerese I do not use (or I substitute for) many punctuation marks. They seem to disagree with Yahoo and others. I hope it doesn*t drive you crazy

Included in This Newsletter:

I have discontinued the table of contents. If anyone finds this difficult, please let me know. I suspect, however, that it was more trouble than it was worth!(-:

No part of this newsletter is paid advertising.

Note from Carolyn:

Dear Subscribers:

Your Authors* Coalition Dream Team (Yes, a joke of sorts!) has added a page on the Authors* Coalition site for publishers! It*s in its infancy but will give presses/publishers exposure and a link (we*re hoping they will return the favor on their sites but it isn*t essential). We*d love it if you*d pass this invitation on to your publisher. He or she can check out the site at http://authorscoalitionandredenginepress.com.

We*re hoping to add other publisher/press perks to this membership as we go along. One of those perks, as an example, is the availability of The Frugal Book Promoter in small quantities (six) at a bookstore discount. That, of course, helps publishers help their authors to promote better. When their authors are promotion savvy, the publisher sees the difference in his or her bottom line. The same discount is available on The Complete Writer now and the The Complete Writer Publishes when it is released in 2006.

We have several presses who already distribute these helpful books to their authors so references are available.

Membership in Authors* Coalition is a good way for small presses to get in on the ground floor, get a bit of exposure and there is no charge. Please consider doing your publisher a favor by letting them know. As they say at the movies, *Pass it Forward.*

Letters-to-the-Editor

Dear Carolyn:
I know I*m a little nitpicker when it comes to grammar but I just looked at your authors coalition logo. Authors in the plural doesn*t require an apostrophe surely and if it*s the coalition belonging to the authors then the apostrophe should be before the s, not after it.

A Sharing with Writers Subscriber

Dear Sharing with Writers Subscriber:
Oh, I think we are helping each other here. If *authors* is plural (which it is in this case) then the apostrophe goes after the *s.* If it is singular, it goes before. Thus, UCLA*s Writers* Program is *Writers** because it refers to all of the writers who participate. Ditto for the possessive apostrophe in Authors* Coalition.

Thank you for giving me a chance to clarify a punctuation issue that confuses more than a few.

Your Sharing with Writers Editor

Authors* Coalition Perks:

Joyce Faulkner, our Webmaster for our Authors* Coalition Website, has been working hard on support materials for you all. The first available is the calendar. These are intended for you to be use in your promotion any way you want them, now, before any event you are doing and ever after. There are more items to come! We chose a calendar because it is something many recipients will keep rather than toss into a junk drawer (per my own advice in The Frugal Book Promoter). They are as low-cost as we could make them and intended as a service for all Authors* Coalition members (that is YOU!) .Go to this page where an order form is provide to see the package offers and more: http://authorscoalitionandredenginepress.com/marketing_collateral.htm.

Then you can click on the blue calendar link or use this one to see the sample using Michael Wallach*s newly released How to Get Arrested in the format. (Yours would, of course, replace his!):

Don*t confuse your readers with links all over the page. One thing should logically lead to another. Navigation and flow should be intuitive and easy to follow. Leave plenty of white space to allow the eye to breathe.

Tip: from Bev Walton-Porter, one of The Complete Writer contributors, on how to find time to write what you really WANT to write: *Go to bed an hour later or get up an hour earlier. I*m a late-nighter, so that works for me. ;) Take one day and let all phone calls go to voicemail and don*t check e-mail or do anything else for X number of hours. Put the world on hold part of one day a week.*

Update on Tracings and a Gift:
Your Copy of Tracings should be in the mail October 17th. online or by mail. E-mail me (HoJoNews@aol.com) for directions or go to http://finishinglinepress.com and click on *New Releases for 2005.*

Here is a poem that didn*t make it into the book but was published by The Image Warehouse; it is a sort of mini-gift to all of you who found a way to support me. I think most of you, as writers, will relate to it.

Poetry be Damned
Damn poetry nags me in my sleep promises words,
pretty on the lining of my lids. They are fickle waifs.
When I put off their prattle until dawn, they disappear
like uncommitted lovers. Their loss reminds
me of a story so heinous I could not believe
it real, nor trust that such a tale could spring
from my fellows* heads even in the days before *politically incorrect* was a phrase that would have had been poured, molten, into a linotype,
rolled out, indelible upon our minds: Six blond,
button-down teens let loose an Ex-Laxed cat
in the car of our school*s only Jew, Richard,
who sat in the desk behind me, traced
his name on my shoulder. But I digress,
excepting that inspiration is seldom gentle
never ethical as I, disillusioned, envision. My nighttime visitor*s great talent is vanquishing
sleep, a male muse, surely, who assures me the words
he spillsinto my dozing mind are brilliant.
In my besotted state I am passionately converted. Later, like a magician*s disappearing ink,
his insight turns vile or void; for me empty and meaningless are earwigs meddling among sacred wafers. A tramp, this inspiration. To poets everywhere he bequeaths pristine lilies; his gifts to me wilt
in morning*s light. My restless writer*s brain
would rather sleep if this nighttime companion
can do no better than the insipid serum I find scrawled
on scratch paper when I arise at noon from a turgid night. He beguiles, offers words like talismans
much like the panda Richard won for me, I,
a child-Madonna, praying this toy would be a potent icon, wondering what others were saying, this black
and white plaything clutched between my friend
and me, fighting a battle that cannot be won.

Grammar Tip:

The New Split Infinitive Rule: There is no such thing! One of my youngest students, Sci-Fi writer Abel Pena, might argue that Star Wars* easily remembered introduction *…to boldly go…* changed all that but people (and, yes, that includes grammarians!) probably accepted split infinitives long before that. One trusted source notes that the ban against splitting infinitives became the darling of teachers and others from about 1850 to 1925. Since then, Associated Press and Chicago Stylebook both recognize that there are times when a perfectly split infinitive is clearer than one that is not. So split away--just be sure that your infinitive is more picturesque or accurate split than not.

Featured Article:

Want to Be Columnist?

Editor*s Note: In this article, Joan Stewart confirms what I say in The Frugal Book Promoter: Giving away articles and columns can be advantageous to the health of your promotion campaign.

Every week, it seems, a Publicity Hound® asks me for advice on how to get a column in their daily newspaper, or local business journal, or even in a national magazine.

I don*t mind sharing advice, but when I get to the part about how they must offer their columns for f~ree, they suddenly lose interest.

When Shannon Seip called me a few years ago asking about a column, I told her the same thing. Write several columns, offer them to the publications that would be the best fit, then if the column takes off, consider asking for money.

She and her partner, Kelly Parthen, followed my advice to the letter. Today, they write a monthly column called *Cinematters,* which shows families how to have fun with movies. They sell it for $30 a month to 30 regional parenting magazines, newspapers and to select parenting websites, capturing a readership of almost 3 million every month.

Smart Publicity Hounds don*t intend to get rich off a column. And you shouldn*t either. Rather, Shannon and Kelly use the column as a springboard to establish credibility and create a platform for what they hope will be a much more profitable venture--*Film Fun* parties in cities throughout the United States. They*re fun events where the entire family can watch movies, eat film-inspired food and participate in movie-related activities.

The lead article in the September/October issue of The Publicity Hound® subscription newsletter explains how Shannon and Kelly created the column, and all the steps they had to take to get it into print. The newsletter also includes:
1. advice on how to approach newspapers and magazines if you want a column
2. a fun contest you can sponsor in your PR department that will result in more creative pitches
3. a website where self-published authors can get advice on any aspect of book marketing,
4. a website where bloggers can get advice on topics dealing with libel
5. how to create publicity at trade shows
more than a dozen ways to get a magazine editor*s attention
6. a website where you can find vendors that specialize in everything from accounting to techie services
7. where to publicize author events
a f~ree clipping service
8. how to get onto the Life, Love and Health® radio show
September and October story ideas
