Subject: [Sharing with Writers] Holiday Sales, Tips and Spread the Love

October 8, 2005 Sharing with Writers:
From the Desks
Of Carolyn Howard-Johnson and Friends

Most recent issues of Sharing with Writers posted at FairgoeBooks in full color and with live links: http://www.angelfire.com/electronic/fairgoebooks/literaryfour.htm and you will find the *Best of Sharing with Writers* at www.ApollosLyre.com. Sharing with Writers is the official newsletter of Authors* Coalition, an organization of writers who help writers.

Note: In order to cut down on computerese I do not use (or I substitute for) many punctuation marks. They seem to disagree with Yahoo and others. I hope it doesn*t drive you crazy

I have discontinued the table of contents. If anyone finds this difficult, please let me know. I suspect, however, that it was more trouble than it was worth!

Note from Carolyn:
Dear Subscribers:

My newsletter last time mentioned the phrase from a book title and movie: Pay It Forward. I hope as authors and writers of heart you take Carolyn See's advice to write one lovely letter a day and The Frugal Book Promoter's advice to pass the word about one worthy book or one worthy writers' site or organization a day.

When speaking of good deeds, we are all on a budget but we all hope (maybe even pray) that others will buy our books. You won't be able to purchase every book that that a critique group member or Web-friend writes but if you give yourself a budget--say one book a month--you will be able to Pay it Forward this way, too. That forward motion will come back to you. Isn't it about sharing and spreading the love?

Authors* Coalition Perks:

Joyce Faulkner, our Webmaster for our Authors* Coalition Website, has been working hard on support materials for you all. The first available is the calendar. These are intended for you to order at a small cost in reasonably small batches so you can target specific audiences, specific needs. (Anything you need in large quantities may be less expensive from your usual printer.)

There are more items to come! We chose a calendar because it is something many recipients will keep rather than toss into a junk drawer (per my own advice in The Frugal Book Promoter). They are as low-cost as we could make them and intended as a service for all Authors* Coalition members (that is YOU!) .Go to this page where an order form is provide to see the package offers and more: http://authorscoalitionandredenginepress.com/marketing_collateral.htm.

Then you can click on the blue calendar link or use this one to see the sample using Michael Wallach*s newly released How to Get Arrested in the format. (Yours would, of course, replace his!):

Tips You Can Use

Editor*s Note: Kathe will be contributing tips on a regular basis--many of them gleaned from her reading and conferences she attends:

At the next fair I do, I am bringing my digital camera to take pictures of children (I have a card that can hold 200 pictures) with their faces sticking out of a hole in a poster that has a character from my book painted on it. This will work at any fair where there is a campus or large lawn available. I will email these free pictures to the families; that will help me get an e-mail list of fairgoers with children--a target audience for some of my books. I can ask for their snail mail addresses on the slip, too.

Once an author has a digital camera, a card to hold the pictures, and the device to load them on her computer, it's a free promo exercise! There is no cost to doing it over and over. The pictures must include a number in the photos that corresponds to the slip with their name, address and email so they can match the photos up with the addresses.

Tip: Hugh Rosen, author of Silent Battlefields:
A Novel (http://www.hughrosen.com/), was seeking a targeted audience. He thought, "Where do people interested in the Holocaust [the subject of my book] assemble?" The idea of turning to the USA Holocaust Memorial Museum occurred to him. People visit there from all around the country and the gift store stocks books! Since anyone buying his book would then take it back to their home city or town that would help created a buzz throughout the country. Hugh wrote to the director of the museum store, stating that I would be willing to donate twenty copies. Within only a couple of days he received an e-mail informing him that the store would be willing to accept the books.

Editor's Note: This differs from the often-used idea of donating one copy of a book to a library or sending one to a store. This one will assure that a book buyer will sit up and take notice if all 20 of those copies sell quickly (and Hugh will be able to assure they do by sending every person he knows who lives in Washington DC or who plans to visit Washington D.C. to the store to purchase it!) Follow-up is needed to be sure the bookstore remains well-stocked!

Authors Guild Sues Google
Citing “Massive Copyright Infringement”

September 20, 2005
Authors Guild News Release

By Paul Aiken

NEW YORK — The Authors Guild and a Lincoln biographer, a
children's book author, and a former Poet Laureate of the United States filed a class action suit today in federal court in Manhattan against Google over its unauthorized scanning and copying of books through its Google Library program. The suit alleges that the $90 billion search engine and advertising juggernaut is engaging in massive copyright infringement at the expense of the rights of individual writers.

Through its Library program, Google is reproducing works still under the protection of copyright as well as public domain works from the collection of the University of Michigan's library.

“This is a plain and brazen violation of copyright law,” said Authors Guild president Nick Taylor. “It's not up to Google or anyone other than the authors, the rightful owners of these copyrights, to decide whether and how their works will be copied.”

The individual plaintiffs are Herbert Mitgang, a former New York Times editorial writer and the author of numerous fiction and nonfiction books, including “The Fiery Trial: A Life of Lincoln,” published by Viking Press; Betty Miles, the award-winning author of many works for children and young adults, and the co-author of “Just Think,” published by Alfred A. Knopf; and Daniel Hoffman, the author and editor of many volumes of poetry, translation, and literary criticism, including “Barbarous Knowledge: Myth in the Poetry of Yeats, Graves and Muir” and “Striking the Stones,” both published by Oxford University Press. Mr. Hoffman was the 1973-74 Poet Laureate of the United States.

Google has agreements with four academic libraries — those of Stanford, Harvard, Oxford and the University of Michigan — and with the New York Public Library to create digital copies of substantial parts of their collections and to make those collections available for searching online. Google has not sought the approval of the authors of these works for this program.

The complaint seeks damages and an injunction to halt further infringements. More information can be found at www.authorsguild.org.

Google News Release

By Susan Wojcicki, Vice President, Google Product Management

Today we learned that the Authors Guild filed a lawsuit to try to stop Google Print. We regret that this group chose to sue us over a program that will make millions of books more discoverable to the world -- especially since any copyright holder can exclude their books from the program. What’s more, many of Google Print’s chief beneficiaries will be authors whose backlist, out of print and lightly marketed new titles will be suggested to countless readers who wouldn’t have found them otherwise.

Let's be clear: Google doesn’t show even a single page to users who find copyrighted books through this program (unless the copyright holder gives us permission to show more). At most we show only a brief snippet of text where their search term appears, along with basic bibliographic information and several links to online booksellers and libraries

Google respects copyright. The use we make of all the books we scan through the Library Project is fully consistent with both the fair use doctrine under U.S. copyright law and the principles underlying copyright law itself, which allow everything from parodies to excerpts in book reviews.

Just as Google helps you find sites you might not have found any other way by indexing the full text of web pages, Google Print, like an electronic card catalog, indexes book content to help users find, and perhaps buy, books. This ability to introduce millions of users to millions of titles can only expand the market for authors’ books, which is precisely what copyright law is intended to foster.

This link will take you to Google’s news release: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2005/09/google-print-and-authors-guild.html

Go After Holiday Book Sales
By Carol White

For many of us, the Holidays are our most productive sales time. Books of all types make wonderful gifts. So what do we need to do to make sure that our product is in people’s minds as they make their holiday gift selections?

The following are some ideas that I am using this year to help boost sales of Live Your Road Trip Dream – Travel for a year for the cost of staying home. I see this as a conversation that we can all have to share ideas and increase sales. Please add your thoughts.

I've sent out 50 postcards (September) to magazines that might do a Holiday gift article or column for travelers suggesting that Live Your Road Trip Dream makes a great gift "for road trip travelers, recent retirees or the hard-to-buy-for dreamer on your list". I included pricing, where to get a review copy, where the book can be purchased (book available everywhere, gifts packs on our website) --so editors can tell their readers, a reference to my Website, and how to contact me (phone, mail, & email) and a little blurb about the book (already on the back of my postcards with the book cover on the front),

My average visitors per day to my website went up in the week after the cards would have arrived -- so I know people at least are considering it. Also, my sales on Amazon went up -- did some people order a copy rather than request a review copy? Hmmm. Remember, magazines work 4-6 months out so the time has probably passed for this one this year. There is always next year. I’ll let you know the results.

I will send a similar card to my newspaper and internet contacts in early November. Most of these articles break right after Thanksgiving through the first week in December. I offer not only the autographed book itself, I have come up with a couple of Gift Pack ideas as well as discounts for multiple sales to one address, and FREE standard shipping in the US during the holidays. I don’t discount the price of the book for these promotions. Let them buy from Amazon if they want cheap! Let them buy from me if they want special! Different channels for different types of buyers.

I am going to offer delayed shipping and billing as an option for the holidays on my website to coincide with some publicity (a book review) in CyberSam -- the Good Sam Club's e-newsletter that breaks November 1. Some great networking led to this opportunity (see the PMA October Newsletter for my article on networking and cross promotion) and I want to capitalize on all of those increased visitors to the site -- get their orders early -- ship and bill later, if they want! The newsletter will have a link to a specially designed Good Sam Club page (that way I can track how many visitors view the page vs. how many actually order) for their exclusive discount and offers! This newsletter goes to many HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of road trippers -- my exact target audience. (Note: If you do something like this that will potentially get a huge response in a short time, make sure your ISP's web server is up to the task -- nothing worse than crashing a server...)

My radio interviews (www.roadtripdream.com/appearances.html ) (typically 4-5 per month) will all focus on my holiday specials now through December. Most hosts are great about giving you the opportunity to say a few words about your Website. After all, my site is the ONLY place you can get autographed copies! (Unless you attend one of our live presentations!)

Our monthly newsletter (www.roadtripdream.com), Road Trip Dreaming, will feature a special promotional holiday offer exclusively for subscribers -- with a suggestion that they pass the newsletter along to friends and family who can also use the discount if they sign-up for the newsletter! Each offer will use a different promotional code through my secure server company (http://www.eftnet.com) so I can track what is coming from where!

One of my major partners, AAA, has released a very good special for all their clubs throughout the US and Canada to purchase our books for their Travel Stores and/or have us present to their clients, as we do here in Oregon. Some of the magazines that I sent the postcards to were AAA magazines, too. Their postcards mentioned the promotion also. This promotion is good through March, 2006, so it has a while to work. Hopefully, this will give them another reason to look at our great promotional offers if not sooner, then later!

Portland offers a very good Holiday Bazaar Thanksgiving weekend. I understand that books do very well at that show. I’m hoping to share a booth with someone to give that venue a try this year. I’m not normally a big fan of bazaar selling, but I hear this is different. We’ll see.
In addition to these special promotions during the holidays, there is some other media coverage coming up that will also provide sales opportunities:
o RV West Magazine – October, 2006 issue
o AM Northwest - Local morning TV show - Portland, OR, - October 12th.
o October radio - Seattle, WA; Orlando, FL (syndicated); and Harrisburg, PA (syndicated)
o Senior Showcase - Portland Cable TV - November, 2005
o Motorhome Magazine - TBD

Never let an opportunity pass you by, and never quit networking with others to share both successes and failures. I look forward to hearing the ideas of others for making their holiday success stories.
