This is my official website launch newsletter. A short and sweet note to you. Www.HowToDoItFrugally took a mere four months to learn from the ground up. (I had no website building experience whatsoever!)

It also took much support from writing friend Joyce Faulkner who is also a director of www.AuthorsCoalitionandRedEnginePress.com and the author of In the Shadow of Suribachi www.joycefaulkner.com). That you all were supportive when I was whining and moaning in this newsletter didn't hurt.

I did this is so that I could have an ever-growing, ever-changing site. I think most of you will be interested in all of it and I'd love to have you visit, but you might be especially interested in:

1. Articles 4 Writers and Editors where I will be posting new articles and reviews often. They are free for the taking for your own newsletters, blogs or whatever. Just let me know so I can thank you!

2. The Links for Readers page. If your book will fit here, let me know but do practice the principles I teach: Submit your material in a format to make it easy on the editor, that is, to make it easy on me! In other words, look at the format and try to emulate it!

3. The Links for Writers page. Tons of resources for you here.

4. Browse around and see how I worked my favorite themes into one site. Disparate writing interests come together pretty well including poetry, my interest in tolerance, my literary writing, my teaching and speaking. You get the idea. You can do the same thing and if you have better ideas for me, let me know. I'm still learning!

~To Abel Peña who took my first class at UCLA a couple of years ago. He has also read The Frugal Book Promoter: How to Do What Your Publisher. He heeded me when I said that thank you notes are an important part of your career as a writer. That is one reason I'm writing this thank you to him in a public way. He has become a shining example to all of us. Recently he contributed to a travel anthology--a lovely piece about a very special kind of romance with an older Italian woman (those of you from my first seminar may remember he was among our youngest class members!). It is exciting to see him succeed, of course, but this is primarily a thank you to him for always mentioning that class he took from me in his various promotion efforts and how the promotion essentials he learned there helped him move forward in his career.

You might check out his Italy from a Backback, edited by Rick Steves. And, I hope--like Abel--we all continue to use thank yous. Our mothers told us we should do it. We didn't like it then. Perhaps that's because we didn't realize how productive they could be!

Remaindering
Reprint from the Jim Cox Report

(Why would you be interested in remaindering when it is a subject of despair for most authors? Because as authors, we are running a business and the time may come when you will need to consider this aspect of the publishing business. That might be because you have storage problems, are interested in moving on for many other reasons. BTW, the Authors' Coalition booth is looking for donated remaindered books to give as gifts with the purchase of books from our booth. Where's the advantage in that? Exposure! Many savvy authors give away lots of their books to start a buzz for its launch, your book could land in the hands of a producer or director or who knows what!? But if you'd rather sell your overstock, Jim Cox tells you how.)

Remaindering books is the selling off of unwanted inventory to a specialized group of wholesalers. This mass disposal of books can happen when:

1. A new edition is coming out that will supersede the old edition

2. An author needs (or wants) to clear out all that unsold stock
boxed up in the garage because they just aren't selling and the
spouse wants to be able to park the car in there again -- or the
publisher is running out of warehousing space.

3. A publisher wants to avoid paying an inventory tax or decides to
go out of business.

4. Any other need or circumstance that compels an author or publisher
to not want to invest further in the inventory they've chosen for disposal.

There can be a wide diversity or range of values to be gained from
remaindering with a host of factors involved including (but not
limited to) the condition of the inventory, the subject matter of the
inventory, the urgency to divest the inventory.

It's always best to try and get competitive bids from Book Remainder
companies and then go with the one that offers you the best deal.
