My fellow AC Members and SWW Subscribers:

Memorial Day. Here are some ramblings on this day. Just a few ideas and memories of how I connect (and disconnect) from this day.

 My husband is an Army Reserve veteran. His education was interrupted by the Berlin Crisis--an event that few outside our generation even remember.
 My grandson just got planted at Fort Irwin in the Mohave Desert (California) where he will train for his second Iraq stint.
 My uncle served in WWII. He is now 86 and suffering from Parkinson's. He is a small man and was assigned bomber duty after being trained to fly small fighter planes. The larger ones were almost impossible for him to control.
 My other uncle, about the same age, served in the South Pacific in that same war. He won't talk about his service years. His wife, now dead, kept a scrapbook picturing what she did while she waited for him.
 My author friends, Pat McGrath Avery and Joyce Faulkner have both written books about the military. Search for them on Amazon.
 My book of poetry, Tracings, won an of excellence award from the Military Writers' Society of America. There is a poem in it called "The War Museum at Oslo" you might like to read. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1599240173/
 Anyone interested in how I watched my grandson graduate from boot camp at the beginning of the Iraq war might want to get an inexpensive little gift book called Support Our Troops (Andrews McMeel) for which I wrote the foreword. Proceeds go to Fischer House, a Ronald McDonald's type home for families of wounded troops. It includes a Support Our Troops magnet and you can probably get the book used--sometimes for as little as $1. (-:

I support the military with all my heart. I do not believe that the world or mankind has evolved enough for our nation not to have the finest military protection in the world. I wish that were so but know it isn't.

I support our troops, certainly. I believe that supporting our troops means bringing them home safely, giving them the benefits that they deserve, supplying them with the equipment they need to do their assigned duties.

I do not believe that any of those things are being done as well as they should be.

On this day, I am meditating for our soldiers, past, present, young old, men and women. Whatever your political bent, I hope you will, too.

Letters-to-the-Editor

Hi Carolyn:

I was just reading some of your letters and want to thank Bev Walton-Porter for listing the library catalogue web site http://worldcat.org/ to see if our books are being carried at libraries across the country. Well you know me. I jumped right onto that sight and found 9 libraries across the country carrying my book. Some had extended branches which also shows where your book is located (section), its status (one of mine was just returned and another is still checked out), and if it is on display (mine is on display at 5 sites in the parenting and children’s sections. VERY COOL! I’m so glad I can now see this and I will also be taking Bev’s advice about writing to other libraries.

I know that Quality Books and Unique Books purchased many copies months ago but never knew where they really ended up. This makes me very happy. I do hope word of mouth will warrant future purchases, but I am so thrilled that people are checking out my book and learning how to be safe!

Dear Carolyn:

More on libraries - I'm sure I've told you that one of my marketing thrusts is to contact every library in the nation by phone and then send a postcard. The results are too happenstance to quantify, but one city in Southern California has decided to buy and place my book in every branch of their system, and they are scheduling an author talk for me at their main branch this summer.

I wonder if many librarians I speak with and then send a postcard to do anything to promote my work to their patrons. Once in a while, though, something wonderful happens that just might help me reach the tipping point.

Thought I'd share that with you. Keep up the wonderful work, and if I forgot to tell you, the UCLA booth was a beautiful accomplishment, something I felt honored to be associated with.

In the News:

In an article in the business pages of the LA Times, Staff Writer Alex Pham reports that newspapers are farming out local reporting to writers overseas. Even reporting on city council doings is being done by Indian writers. Apparently the ease of doing their research by watching streamed meetings, the accessibility of other research on the web and cheap Indian labor is contributing to this trend. This trend will make it difficult for those who might want to make a career in journalism. A tighter American job markets ahead will mean journalists may have to work longer, smarter and at lower wages

Newspapers are using Craigslist's classified to troll for job seekers. One more way that the Net is changing job markets.

Why You Need an Editor

Paraphrased: An author wanted me to edit his book but when I couldn't take on another project right now he thought he'd use his students to edit by offering to pay them per typo they found. Here is my answer:
Dear Author-In-Need-of-an-Editor:

Please, please, please hire a real editor. And that, by the way, is different from hiring a professional proofreader. (Though I do admire your effort to get young people involved in the publishing process.)
There is a lot more to putting out a great book than finding the typos and grammar errors--large or small. Look at this way. If you took an online class from a university that vets its instructors, it would cost you about from $300 to $400. Consider a great editor an investment not only in your book but in your future writing. Find an editor that considers education part of what she does. She can tell you why she is making changes so you learn something from each edit. I do that by making editing suggestions with using the TRK (track) feature in Word. That way a writer won't refuse a suggestion because he doesn't understand the grammar, style or formatting rules behind the change. Edits on subtleties like clause placement, use of adverbs and adjectives and more can be misunderstood. There is a whole book's worth of those subtleties, thus THE FRUGAL EDITOR.

I wrote THE FRUGAL EDITOR, because editing is so much more than proofreading and we all know that there are way too many writers out there (not on this list, of course!) who think it's all about grammar, spelling, punctuation. It's not. It's also about style, technique, formatting, even spotting possibilities for improvement. By the way, it is NOT about changing an author's voice. And voice is NOT the same as style. Style is the expectations of certain publishers for specific genres. Newspapers have different style expectations from publishers of fiction, as an example.

Saving Money on Gas for Writers

Don't you want to spend less money on gas or other items so you can spend more money on books? Making real changes will have more effect than not running your car's air conditioner (which doesn't save much of anything) or giving into the one day gas boycott myth which can be found at http://www.snopes.com/politics/gasoline/nogas.asp
Not every idea in this list will work for you. Find just one or two ideas that work for you; that's how a real gas saving movement starts.

1. Remove excess weight from your car. The more drag on your car the more gas you waste. One hour of your time can save you a lot of money. I am not telling you to remove your spare tire and emergency safety kit, but do you really need three bowling balls in your trunk and half your stuffed animal collection sitting in your back window?

2. Save on trips to your office supply store. Keep your writing supplies well stocked and know your inventory and organize it well. If you can't find your stamps and pens you will end up buying what you already have. This is a bad habit with me and I know I should de-clutter more.

3. Use public transpiration when and where it is available. Public transportation also can inspire stories.

4. Slow down: Excessive speed and aggressive driving wastes gas and it's not going to get you there faster. Leave for appointments a little bit early.

5. Use maps or a gps in your car so you won't get lost if you're not sure where that writer's convention or new bookstore is.

6. Are there times you can walk or use a bike? I can't ride a bike but there are times that I can walk. Writers often don't get enough exercise.

7. Save trips to the grocery store by stocking up on these items, powdered milk, canned meats or veggie meats, dry beans, light canned fruits and vegetables. I never have to rush to the store because the milk has been drunk. I use a stroller in the summer to get my groceries. Can you use a wagon or pull sled? Someone who lives out in the country might not have food available within walking distance but if you do you can mark it off as exercise.

8. Car pool: In some areas, being able to use the car pool lane will help you avoid traffic jams. If you aren't stuck in traffic, you can be at home writing or reading.

9. If you live in a big farm community you can save gas by buying local produce and you may save by buying non local produce in bulk and cooking and freezing it or drying it. Zucchini doesn't freeze well but bananas without the peal can freeze for use in banana bread.

10. If you have the money for a new car, buy a hybrid. Do not buy a SUV that is not a hybrid.

11. Arrange to do your errands in batches. Go to the bookstore and meet a friend for lunch in one trip.

12. Don't sell your diesel until you check to see if yours can be adapted to run on corn oil.

13. Make saving gas fun for you if it's not fun it you will find yourself less inclined to find your own gas money saving steps.

By the way, I write my stories on scrap paper. This saves time and gas for having to buy more notebooks or computer paper.

As I’ve mentioned before, having inbound links (links from other sites to yours) is important. But do not fall for a scheme that promises to provide you with thousands of links. Some of these are link farms – websites that have nothing but links on them. While this does link to your site, the search engines consider this spam and may penalize your site by lowering its ranking or suppressing it from the search results. The lesson here is to cultivate legitimate links. Besides, you want targeted visitor, people who have an interest in you and your work. Random links from unrelated sites do little good.

START A NEIGHBORHOOD NEWSLETTER - Solicit advertising fees from local businesses. Do research on publishing fees. Profile a personality. Interview ordinary people in your neighborhood with extraordinary stories. You can also sell the profile and photos to features editors of papers and mags. Write about the eco-friendly businesses. Sell different versions of the article to trade magazines, environmental magazines, the local paper and the business owner as part of his PR kit. Provide photos of people doing their work.

They'll read it on their screen or print it out. You can sell it or give it away.
