1. EDITORIAL:
WELCOME new subscribers! May you all find this newsletter as inspiring and worthy as I do sharing it each week. And what a week we’ve had here in Houston, Texas. For nearly a week Tropical Storm Allison hovered and spun above us and poured down 40 inches of rain that caused major flooding. What used to be freeways, feeder roads, and streets were transformed into rivers, leaving 20,000 displaced homeowners and a city of 4 million at a standstill. Now we are deep into the cleanup with much help from the National Guard, FEMA, Salvation Army and good samaritans all across the city. Personally we had no damage as our apartment is on the second floor. On Saturday I was to have my first interview with immigration regarding my employment authorization permit but all interviews were canceled due to the floods. I’ll let you know how it progresses from here.
I’d also like to take this time to thank ALL of you that read, rated and commented on my poems at Authors Den. My spirit soars from your kindnesses! This week I’d like to direct you to my short stories and look forward to any feedback, good or bad! In this week’s newsletter you’ll find some writing markets online that actually pay you! A media-matching service created in December of 1998, which unites writers and publishers. Writers can post their articles for free to be featured on the site. They're stored in a searchable database. Publishers, webmasters and ezine editors can then come in and find content. There's a link on the bottom of every article that you can click on and request permission from the author to use the article. The author can then yea/nay the use of the article. The answer is almost always yes, because that's why they put the article on the site anyway! The general custom is that you get permission and then you can publish the article as long as you use the author's bio/contact information.

We're a quarterly magazine that publishes new science fiction and fantasy short stories. We're interested in stories where violence is rejected as a means for solving problems. We're also interested in stories with philosophical, political, or religious themes. We're not interested in stories where the good guys kill the bad guys and then live happily ever after. Challenging Destiny is a Canadian magazine, but we publish authors from all over the world (well, Canada, the US, the UK, and Japan so far). We encourage first-time authors to send us their stories. We buy first North American serial rights, and currently pay authors 1 cent (Canadian) per word plus 2 copies of the magazine upon publication. I am looking for stories with strong characters where the story line evolves naturally out of the characters and the situations they find themselves in. The truth is that I don't really know what sort of story I want until I read it. If your story has believable characters and is a good, entertaining read, I want to read it. If your story falls loosely into the horror/dark fantasy/science fiction or fantasy categories, please feel free to send it along. I am also keen to receive humorous submissions (I don't get anywhere near enough) so long as the humour evolves naturally out of the characters and the situations they find themselves in. I am a graduate student in the English department at Carnegie Mellon University and I have selected authors and poets I know. I have not tried to be exhaustive nor politically correct. I install new cards regularly as I find passages I like in books I read. If Nevada's paintings seem like an odd mix of ideas and styles, that's because they are! She changes focus and style to suit a mood, to break out of a rut, to make a statement, as therapy, or simply to experiment. A prolific artist, she often stays up all night to paint when the world is quiet and the phone doesn't ring. She has a skeptical but abiding interest in the paranormal as well as the natural, and both figure prominently in her work. She is currently working on a series of fairy paintings.

As an alternative to George W. Bush's energy policies and lack of emphasis on efficiency, conservation and alternative fuels, there will be a voluntary rolling blackout on the first day of summer, June 21, from 7 p.m. - 10 p.m. It doesn't matter what time zone, what state, what country you’re in. If we all turn out the lights at 7 p.m. regardless of where we live, the "blackout" will roll across the planet! It's a simple protest and a symbolic act. Turn out your lights, televisions, radios and more from 7 p.m. - 10 p.m. on June 21. If it plugs in, turn it off! Light a candle to read by, kiss your lover in the moonlight, take a stroll in the dark, tell your children ghost stories, or make up a new and innovative activity that requires no electricity. All you have to do is have fun in the dark. Forward this information as widely as possible, to your government representatives and environmental contacts.
