1. EDITORIAL:

Welcome back everyone! This past week I’ve had another lesson in letting go. You may be aware of Microsoft’s efforts in getting their ‘Smart Tags’ across the net, in a sneaky effort to steal traffic from Web sites and redirect them to their own chosen sites that pay for this service. Well I learned that one of the programs we have been using for the past couple of years is into similar theft. The software I’m referring to is called Gator and it saves passwords for you at different sites so that when you return to the site it’ll automatically put in the password for you. The software that enables this is called scumware.
Gator is selling ads designed to block banners on sites such as Yahoo with pop-ups of the exact same dimensions, completely obscuring the original ad. The pop-ups hover over the banners even when the visitor scrolls down the page, making it even more difficult to discern that the visible ad is a substitute. Basically what they do is scan Web sites for keywords and then overlap them with their own links. You lose traffic and potential sales.
I believe our Web sites are our own property and nobody has the right to change any codes unless you give them permission. So yesterday we deleted Gator from our computer and will return to writing down chosen passwords as we need them. It was a torn decision because some Web sites we’ve joined will have passwords we probably won’t remember nor be able to retrieve. But I feel we’ve made the right decision in not sponsoring such theft online. Do you have Gator? If so, I’d like you to consider using this option of uninstalling it as well. Do you need more information about this? Just send me an email and I’ll forward it to you.
This week I’m sharing with you some writing contests available. I hope you take the time to check them out. Today in history:
September 5, 1997 - Mother Teresa (Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu) died of a heart attack at her Missionaries of Charity headquarters in Calcutta, India. The Albanian nun had celebrated her 87th birthday just nine days earlier. The recipient of the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize, Mother Teresa gave hope to millions - caring for, helping and listening to the poor and downtrodden.

Did You Know? Rubber is one of the ingredients of bubble gum. It is the substance that allows the chewer to blow a bubble.
Did You Know? Lilies of the Field (1963), starring Oscar winner Sidney Poitier, had several different working titles while the film was in production. Among them was The Amen Man and Piety in the Sky.
Did You Know? Sir George Cayley (1773-1857), a British nobleman, made the first serious attempts to invent the airplane. He built the first successful gliders.
