1. EDITORIAL:

Hello everyone and welcome back! Greetings to you new subscribers too! I’m going to get off topic here for a minute to share with you something my good friend and writer, Sandy McCollum sent me. She’s been creating medicine bags - a small leather pouch worn around the neck with a small amount of American soil in them to wear next to their heart. They have red, white and blue beadwork on them and are made of butter-soft buckskin. “I could use some help, if anyone wants to make and send them, too. Heck, I'll even send some buckskin and beads to anyone who wants to help.” If you would like to help her, let me know and I’ll forward it on to Sandy. Here’s one of the addresses where you can send not only these medicine bags, but cards, jams, whatever you can think of that will remind these soldiers they are in our hearts.

Today in history:
October 10, 1972 - On this date, The Washington Post, in articles by reporters Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, uncovered a massive effort on the part of CREEP, Committee for the Reelection of the President, to disrupt the Democratic campaign. Their activities and findings were later immortalized in the film All The President's Men.

Did You Know? The number of hamburgers the McDonald’s fast-food chain has sold is more than 12 times the world's total population.
Did You Know? Abe Silverstein, who headed NASA's Space Flight Development Program, proposed the name Apollo for the space exploration programs in the 1960s. He chose that legendary Greek name because the virile Apollo was a god who rode through the skies in a magnificent golden chariot. The precedent of naming manned spacecraft for mythological gods had been set earlier with Project Mercury, also named by Silverstein.

I am now seeking written works (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, journalistic commentary/articles) for publication in a new anthology of masculist literature. I plan to compile these works over a year's time and publish them as a collection in both e-book and physical form (if possible). We are attempting to cover ALL aspects of the men's movement in some form or other. That means you have a wide range of topics to choose to write about. Because we don't want everyone writing about the same topic, it would be wise to submit your topic idea to me before you begin writing or submit your work. You will retain the copyright on any work you submit to us. We only ask permission to edit your work for mistakes and clarity, and for the rights to publish it in this anthology and any future revisions or redistributions of this anthology. There is no guarantee of financial reward for your work in this anthology. It's a labor of love for now. If it does end up turning a profit, we will distribute those profits equally among the authors.

The Akron Series in Poetry has been founded to bring to the public writers who speak in original and compelling voices. Each year, The University of Akron Press will offer the Akron Poetry Prize, a competition open to all poets writing in English. The winning poet will receive $1,000 and publication of his or her book. The final selection will be made by a nationally prominent poet. The final judge for 2002 will be Charles Simic. Other manuscripts may also be considered for publication in the series. Manuscripts must be postmarked between May 15 and June 30 of each year. An entry fee of $25 is required for each manuscript submission.

The Press publishes research in many academic fields, with particular emphases on western and northern Canada. The Press is recognized for publishing in the following disciplines: History, Literary Criticism, Classics, Political Science, Canadian Studies, Science, especially relating to Nature and Environment, and interdisciplinary fields including Native Studies, Slavic Studies, and Middle East Studies. We accord low priority to unrevised theses, festschriften, compilations of discrete essays or articles, and proceedings of conferences, symposia, and seminars. Fiction, poetry, plays, juvenilia, and periodicals will not normally be considered. Canadian works that are analytical in nature are especially welcome, whether they are biographies of persons who have played a pivotal role in Canada's history, or works that probe societal and economic forces that have shaped the nation. The Press is also interested in publishing scholars who wish to interpret Canada, both past and present. Works on Canada's foreign and defense policies are also sought.
Manuscripts of 500 pages or fewer will have a greater chance of acceptance than longer works because of escalating production costs.

Naturally, you'll be wondering what an erudite gentleman such as I would be doing with such a list on his site. A few summers ago, I had the pleasure of shooting a documentary on rodeos. It was a wonderful experience, with one exception. PA announcers at rodeos have this terrible predisposition towards playing country music at high decibel levels, virtually non-stop. In addition to driving my sound guys crazy, this led to the discovery that our entire crew had pretty much reached our maximum saturation point for country music.... after the first rodeo. By the end of the summer, I found myself actually singing along with a song about how "I'm married to a waitress and I don't even know her name."

In this updated iteration, our goal is a meaningful survey and near permanent archive of 1,000 languages.
