On Tuesday, October 23, 2007 at 4p.m. Conversations Book Club of Mississippi will hold a press conference at the Richard Wright Library (515 McDowell Road in Jackson, MS) to discuss its final chapter that has been added to its literary community: The C.U.T. Society. The C.U.T., or the Conversations Urban Teen Society, will focus on books that are written with the streets in mind. Though there are titles on the market that seem to praise the so-called "Gangster Life", the C.U.T. will discuss books that deal with real-life situations and help the reader to see the consequences that come with their actions.
Beginning in November, the C.U.T. will meet every 4th Wednesday at Richard Wright Library in Jackson, MS (515 W. McDowell Road) at 6p.m. for one hour. The discussions will be led by Conversations Book Club President Cyrus A. Webb and will give an overview of the book then address the issues that the book seems to address. The first meeting will be Wednesday, November 28, 2007. To begin this new chapter, Webb thought it fitting to have Bestselling author C-Murder's book DEATH AROUND THE CORNER be the first book for the club.
"Of the almost 100 books I have read this year, this one is the most real to me," said Webb in a statement. "Cee's novel about a young man's struggle with his personal demons and the world around him is one that resonated with me on so many levels. He puts you there, right in the middle of every situation. That's a gift, and one that I know those who read the book can appreciate."
Conversations Book Club chose DEATH AROUND THE CORNER as their book of the year and made history in October 2007 by becoming the first book club to ever host the platinum-selling recording artist/author. Corey "C-Murder" Miller visited over 2000 individuals during his book tour in the state October 11-12, 2007.
Because of the subject matter of the books that will be discussed, Webb has set the age for the book club at 17 and up. "It is designed for mature teens," he said, "however, we hope that adults will also join us to give their perspective on the titles chosen."
At the press conference Webb will address some of the concerns and criticism he has gotten by some of the books that he has picked for this new book club. A listing of the titles can be found at http://thecutsociety.blogspot.com. "I can understand why some might not agree with some of my choices," remarked Webb, "but I also see the bigger picture. We want young people to read, and to do that we have to give them something they can relate to and will want to read and talk about. These books are guaranteed to do just that."
