Is it hot enough for you yet?

Let’s face it: August is a sweltering month everywhere in the Northern Hemisphere almost without exception. My brain feels like those eggs in the frying pan in that famous “This is your brain on drugs” commercial. Any questions? :-)

Because of the heat(and because my brain feels like a pair of fried eggs) this month’s Every Day Is Mother’s Day column is about a cooler period in my life. It’s entitled “Missing Y’all” and it isn’t about August, the heat or anything weather related. You could call it a lament of sorts—the kind of lament you hear kids whine when you tell them they have only a few short weeks until school starts up again. (For some reason thinking about shipping the kids off to school actually makes my brain feel cooler. Hmm…)

Not much happening here. I still have three fiction and two non-fiction manuscripts floating around in the publishing world. I guess we can blame the heat on the slow responses. It couldn’t be because publishing people are all on vacation this month now, could it?

Q: Do you ever feel like “throwing in the towel” in the writing game and give up for good?

A: Of course. Hasn’t every artist felt that way at one point in their career? It’s not the creative aspects that get you down but the business side. You could paint the next “Mona Lisa” or write the next “Gone With The Wind” but you can’t necessarily attract the attention of an editor at a big name publishing house since their upcoming release slots are filled up with reissued ten year old novels from “big name authors”. Like everything in life “it’s not what you know but who you know” that counts.

If you’re feeling like “throwing in the towel” for good on your creative pursuits I’ll make a deal with you: Let’s use our “towels” to lay out for a brief sunbath and make a promise to ourselves. After the weather turns cooler and we’re feeling refreshed, we’ll get back in the game and start writing, painting or whatever again. Deal? :-)
